DynaLock 6171 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can the DynaLock 6171 pushbutton be mounted outdoors on a gate or exterior door?
That is exactly what the 6170 Series is built for. The button assembly is sealed against moisture and dust, rated IP68 water-tight for immersion up to 1 meter, IP64 moisture-proof against splashing from any direction, and IP64 dust-tight. Operating range is -67F to +185F, so it holds up in cold-climate exterior gate and door applications. A weatherproof faceplate gasket and tamper-resistant faceplate screws come with it. If there is no recessed box at the location, order the BBX option to get the weatherproof surface back box.
2) What electrical box does the DynaLock 6171 weatherproof pushbutton mount to?
All 6170 Series models mount on a standard single-gang box. If you are surface mounting on a gate post, masonry, or anywhere there is no box in the wall, specify the weatherproof surface back box option and it ships with the button. That back box is a separate ordering choice, so pick it at the time you order rather than sourcing one later.
3) Is the DynaLock 6171 a momentary or maintained switch, and can it wire into both normally open and normally closed circuits?
Momentary action only. The 6171 uses SPDT double break (Form Z) contacts, which gives you both a normally open and a normally closed set off the same press, so it drops into a mag lock release circuit, a request-to-exit input, or a strike circuit without extra relays. It will not hold a lock released; if you need the button to latch in position, use a maintained device such as the RCI 908 Series exit button with maintained operation or the RCI 919 Series rotary release.
4) Does the DynaLock 6171 have tamper protection for an exterior wall?
Two layers, and one of them is an ordering choice. Tamper-resistant faceplate screws ship standard with every 6170 Series button, along with the normal faceplate screws. Beyond that, you can order the 6171 with an anti-tamper switch built in, which gives your panel a signal if the plate is pulled. For an unsupervised exterior gate or a perimeter door, specify the anti-tamper version.
5) What is the difference between the DynaLock 6171 weatherproof pushbutton and the Securitron PB4L?
The DynaLock 6171 is a weatherproof momentary pushbutton with a 3/4 inch white raised dome button, green LED backlight field selectable for 12 or 24VDC, SPDT double break contacts, and a sealed aluminum body rated IP68 water-tight to 1 meter and IP64 dust-tight, with a weatherproof faceplate gasket and tamper-resistant screws included. The Securitron PB4L is an illuminated halo push button with a stainless push button. Both are illuminated release buttons; the 6171 is the one built specifically for outdoor and washdown exposure, while the PB4L is described around its illuminated halo styling for interior openings.
6) I need an exit release for an interior corridor and do not need weatherproofing. What can I use instead of the DynaLock 6171?
For a dry interior opening, the Securitron PB3 Series push button or the Securitron PB5 medium round illuminated push button both serve as request-to-exit releases without the sealed outdoor construction. The DynaLock 6171 carries the IP68 water-tight and IP64 dust-tight sealed aluminum assembly and an operating range of -67F to +185F, which is what you are paying for when the button sits outdoors or at a gate. Indoors that sealing is not doing any work, so a standard interior button covers the same momentary release function.
7) Does the RCI 950 push plate work as a substitute for the DynaLock 6171 pushbutton?
They are not interchangeable in intent. The RCI 950HP is a round push plate with a handicap symbol and momentary switch in satin stainless steel, sized and marked as a barrier-free actuator that a user strikes with a hand or elbow. The DynaLock 6171 is a 3/4 inch raised dome button on a single gang plate with a blank faceplate and no marking, intended as a momentary release or request-to-exit control. If the opening needs an accessible actuator with the wheelchair symbol, the 950HP is the correct part; if you need a small sealed button on a single gang box outdoors, the 6171 is.
8) The opening needs a marked emergency release rather than a blank button. What should I order instead of the DynaLock 6171?
The 6171 ships with a blank faceplate and carries no text or symbol. Where code or the spec calls for a labeled emergency release, the ACSI 1320-1-MOM-ER is a pushbutton switch marked Emergency Release, and the Securitron EEB is an emergency exit push button with interchangeable LED lenses. The RCI 908 Series is available with red EXIT text and maintained operation if the application wants a latching button that stays actuated rather than the momentary action the 6171 uses on every model.
9) I need a maintained switch, not momentary. What are my options if the DynaLock 6171 will not do it?
Every 6171 model is momentary-action with SPDT double break contacts, so it releases only while pressed. For a maintained state, the RCI 908 Series is offered with maintained operation, and the RCI 919 Series is a rotary release button with maintained operation in satin aluminum. The RCI 909 Series is a flush mount momentary rocker switch rated 250VAC 10A if you want momentary action in a rocker rather than a dome button.
10) Does the DynaLock 6171 run on 12VDC or 24VDC?
Either. The green LED backlight behind the button is field selectable for 12 or 24VDC, so one part covers both common access control power supplies and you don't have to decide at the order stage. Switch contacts are rated 3 A at 115VAC.
11) What does the blank faceplate on the DynaLock 6171 mean, and when would I want marked text instead?
Blank means no engraved legend on the plate, just the 3/4 inch white raised dome button with its green LED backlight. That suits a general release or request-to-exit station where a legend would be wrong or where signage is posted separately. If the opening needs the button identified for life safety, a marked device is the better call, such as the ACSI 1320-1-MOM-ER pushbutton marked Emergency Release or the RCI 908 Series button with red EXIT text.
12) What do I have to specify when ordering the DynaLock 6171 pushbutton?
Two choices decide the part. First, whether you want the anti-tamper switch. Second, whether you need the weatherproof surface back box, which you order only if there is no single-gang box already in the wall. Any combination of the two is available, including both together. The gasket, tamper-resistant screws, green LED backlit button, and 12/24VDC selection are standard on every version.
13) Is the DynaLock 6171 suitable for an interior office door, or is it overkill?
It will work fine indoors, but you are paying for a sealed outdoor assembly you don't need. The 6170 Series is aimed at exposed exterior and harsh-environment use. For a dry interior corridor or office, a standard interior station like the Securitron PB3 Series push button, the Securitron PB5 medium round illuminated button, or the Trine 342 narrow style switch covers the same momentary release job. The Trine 342 is the one to look at if your mounting surface is a narrow mullion or door frame.
14) The 6171 mounts on a single gang box, but I have a narrow mullion. Is there an alternative?
All 6171 models mount on a single gang box, with a weatherproof surface back box available as an option, so you need the width for a standard single gang plate. Where the frame member is too narrow for that, the Trine 342 is a narrow style electric door switch sized for tighter mullions and frame faces. The tradeoff is that you give up the sealed IP68 button assembly the 6171 provides for exterior and gate use.
15) Should I use a keyswitch instead of the DynaLock 6171 pushbutton?
That depends on whether the release should be open to anyone at the door. The 6171 is a pushbutton anyone can press, which is what you want for request-to-exit or a free release at a gate. The ACSI 1310-1 is a mortise keyswitch, so actuation requires a key and the release is restricted to keyholders. Pick the keyswitch when the control is on the secure side or must not be operable by the general public, and the 6171 when a sealed outdoor button is the goal.
16) Which release buttons match a brushed stainless faceplate on the rest of my doors?
The DynaLock 6171 is furnished in brushed stainless steel US32D. Among comparable release controls, the RCI 950HP round push plate is satin stainless steel and the Securitron PB4L uses a stainless push button. If your openings are specified in satin aluminum instead, the RCI 919 rotary release is offered in satin aluminum and the RCI 909F flush rocker comes in a beige finish.
17) What finish is the DynaLock 6171 faceplate, and will it match the other push stations in my building?
The 6171 faceplate is brushed stainless steel, US32D. That is the standard commercial satin stainless finish, so it lines up with the bulk of exit devices, push plates, and other stations already on most commercial openings. Among comparable buttons, the RCI 950 Series round push plate is also satin stainless if you need a matching interior actuator.
18) What is the button itself made of on the DynaLock 6171, and how big is it?
A 3/4 inch diameter white thermoplastic raised dome, integrated into a completely sealed aluminum body. The raised dome profile is easy to find and press with gloves on, which matters on exterior gates and loading docks, and the green LED behind it keeps the station visible after dark.
