Model 6172 Weatherproof Pushbutton, Faceplate Silkscreened “EXIT”

The 6170 Series Weatherproof Pushbutton features a commercial-grade switch assembly, completely sealed against moisture and dust intrusion. DynaLock 6172 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Does the DynaLock 6172 pushbutton need a back box, or does it mount to an existing single-gang box?
All 6170 Series models mount on a standard single-gang box. If you are surface-mounting on a wall, column or gate post where no box exists, order the BBX option to add a weatherproof surface back box. Both configurations are available on the 6172, with and without the back box.
2) What voltage does the DynaLock 6172 EXIT button run on, and is the LED separate?
The green LED backlight behind the white dome button is field selectable for 12 or 24 VDC, so one part covers either supply on your access control panel or power supply. The switch contacts themselves are momentary SPDT double break (Form Z) rated 3 A at 115 VAC.
3) Will the DynaLock 6172 work as a request-to-exit release for a maglock?
That is its intended use. The 6172 is a momentary-action release or request-to-exit control for electric locks on doors and gates in commercial, industrial and institutional work. Because contacts are SPDT double break (Form Z), you get both a normally closed path to break maglock power directly and a normally open path to signal a controller, at 3 A / 115 VAC.
4) Is the DynaLock 6172 momentary or maintained?
Momentary only. Every 6170 Series model, the 6172 included, is momentary-action, so the door releases while the button is pressed and re-secures when it is let go. If your application needs the button to latch in the released state, look at a maintained device instead, such as the RCI 908 Series electronic exit button with maintained operation or the RCI 919 Series rotary release with maintained operation.
5) Does the DynaLock 6172 satisfy an ADA push-plate requirement on a barrier-free entrance?
The DynaLock 6172 uses a 3/4 inch diameter raised dome button on a single-gang faceplate silkscreened EXIT, which is a small-actuator release rather than a large push plate. Where the drawing calls for a barrier-free actuator, the RCI 950 Series round push plate with handicap symbol in satin stainless is the momentary switch built for that purpose. Keep the 6172 where outdoor sealing is the governing requirement.
6) What is the closest alternative to the DynaLock 6172 exit pushbutton for an interior door where weather sealing is not needed?
The DynaLock 6172 is built for outdoor and harsh-environment use, with an aluminum body sealed to IP68 water-tight, IP64 moisture and dust ratings, and a -67F to +185F operating range. For a protected interior opening, the Securitron PB3 Series push button or the Securitron PB5 Series medium round illuminated push button cover the same momentary release duty without the weatherproof construction. The DynaLock 6172 also carries an EXIT silkscreened faceplate; if you want EXIT text on an interior button, the RCI 908 Series electronic exit button with red EXIT text is the one to look at, though it is a maintained-operation device rather than momentary.
7) I need a momentary exit release that stays released until reset instead of restoring instantly - what should I use instead of the DynaLock 6172?
Every DynaLock 6172 is momentary-action with SPDT double-break contacts, so the circuit changes state only while the button is pressed. If the application needs the switch to hold its state until someone resets it, the RCI 908 Series electronic exit button with red EXIT text is a maintained-operation device, and the RCI 919 Series rotary release button is maintained as well in a satin aluminum finish. The Securitron EEB emergency exit push button is another route where a deliberate, held release action is wanted.
8) What is the alternative to the DynaLock 6172 for a narrow aluminum door stile or mullion?
The DynaLock 6172 mounts to a single-gang box with a weatherproof faceplate gasket, so it needs a standard single-gang footprint. On a narrow stile or mullion, the Trine 342 narrow style electric door switch is the form factor made for the restricted width. The RCI 909 Series flush-mount momentary rocker switch is another slim flush option, rated 250VAC 10A, against the 6172 contact rating of 3 A at 115VAC.
9) What does the anti-tamper switch option on the DynaLock 6172 add?
It is an ordering choice: the 6172 can be specified with or without an anti-tamper switch, and it can be combined with or without the weatherproof surface back box, giving four build combinations. Tamper-resistant faceplate screws and standard faceplate mounting screws come with every unit regardless of which option you pick.
10) What finish is the DynaLock 6172 faceplate, and what does it say?
Brushed stainless steel, US32D, on a single-gang plate silkscreened EXIT. The button itself is a 3/4 inch diameter white raised thermoplastic dome with green LED backlighting, so it reads clearly at night on an exterior opening.
11) How does the DynaLock 6172 compare with a Securitron PB series push button for an exterior door?
The difference that matters outdoors is the sealing. The 6172 is specified as a weatherproof assembly, IP68 water-tight to 1 meter and IP64 against splash and dust, with a faceplate gasket. The Securitron PB3, PB4L illuminated halo, and PB5 medium round illuminated buttons are the common interior-grade alternatives in the same push-to-exit role. If the opening is protected and indoors, any of those will do the job; if the button sees weather, stay with the 6172.
12) For an exterior gate release, why choose the DynaLock 6172 over a standard indoor exit button?
The DynaLock 6172 is sealed against moisture and dust intrusion for outdoor exposure, rated IP68 water-tight to 1 meter immersion and IP64 for splashing and dust, in a sealed aluminum body operating from -67F to +185F, with a weatherproof faceplate gasket and tamper-resistant screws included. It can also be ordered with an anti-tamper switch and a weatherproof surface back box. Indoor-oriented buttons such as the Securitron PB3 Series or the RCI 909 Series flush mount rocker are built for protected locations, so on an exposed gate the sealed 6172 is the appropriate device.
13) Which illuminated push button compares with the DynaLock 6172 if I want a lit button indoors?
The DynaLock 6172 has a green LED backlit white thermoplastic dome, field selectable for 12 or 24 VDC, on a brushed stainless steel US32D faceplate. For lit buttons without the weatherproof sealing, the Securitron PB4L Series pairs an illuminated halo with a stainless push button, and the Securitron PB5 Series is a medium round illuminated button. The Securitron EEB uses interchangeable LED lenses if you want to change the indicator color.
14) Is a mortise keyswitch like the ACSI 1310-1 a substitute for the DynaLock 6172?
No. The DynaLock 6172 is a momentary pushbutton with an EXIT faceplate that anyone on the secure side can press to release an electric lock. The ACSI 1310-1 is a mortise keyswitch from the 1300 Series, so it requires a key to operate and is used for authorized control rather than free egress. If both functions are wanted at an opening, they are two separate devices.
15) What should I order instead of the DynaLock 6172 if the faceplate needs to read Emergency Release rather than EXIT?
The DynaLock 6172 faceplate is silkscreened EXIT, and the model text is fixed. Where the legend must read Emergency Release, the ACSI 1320-1-MOM-ER pushbutton switch is marked Emergency Release and is a momentary device like the 6172. The RCI 908 Series carries red EXIT text if a different EXIT treatment is what you are after.
16) Is there a version of this weatherproof button for emergency egress rather than a plain EXIT label?
The 6172 specifically carries an EXIT silkscreen on the faceplate. For an emergency-release marked device, the ACSI 1320-1-MOM-ER pushbutton switch is marked "Emergency Release", and the Securitron EEB emergency exit push button with interchangeable LED lenses is another option. Those are separate products from the 6172.
