DynaLock 6176 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can the DynaLock 6176 pushbutton be mounted outdoors on an exterior gate or door?
That is what the 6170 Series was built for. The 6176 button assembly is sealed against moisture and dust, rated IP68 water-tight for immersion up to 1 meter, IP64 moisture-proof against splashing from any direction, and IP64 dust-tight. It operates from -67F to +185F, so it holds up in unheated and exposed locations. A weatherproof faceplate gasket comes with it, and if you are surface mounting on a wall or gate post with no box in place, order the BBX option to get a weatherproof surface back box.
2) What box does the DynaLock 6176 weatherproof pushbutton mount to?
All 6170 Series models mount on a standard single-gang box, and the 6176 ships with a weatherproof faceplate gasket plus both tamper-resistant and standard faceplate mounting screws. If there is no box in the wall, or you are mounting to a surface where you cannot recess one, add the weatherproof surface back box option and you get a complete exterior mount without cutting into the wall.
3) Will the DynaLock 6176 pushbutton work on a 12VDC maglock circuit, or do I need a 24V version?
One part covers both. The green LED backlight on the 6176 is field selectable for 12 or 24VDC, so you are not ordering a voltage-specific button. The switch itself is momentary-action SPDT double break (Form Z) rated 3 A at 115VAC, which gives you both a normally open and a normally closed set to work with for release and for signaling back to the panel.
4) Is the DynaLock 6176 a momentary button or does it latch?
Momentary only. Every model in the 6170 Series is momentary-action, so the contacts transfer while the button is pressed and return when you let go. That makes it a release or request-to-exit control, not a lock-down or hold-open switch. If your application needs the circuit to stay held after one press, look at a maintained-action device instead, such as the RCI 908 Series exit button with maintained operation or the RCI 919 Series rotary release with maintained operation.
5) What options do I have to specify when ordering the DynaLock 6176?
Two choices. First, whether you want the anti-tamper switch added. Second, whether you want the weatherproof surface back box (the BBX option) included. All four combinations are available, so you can order it plain, with tamper only, with the back box only, or with both. Tamper-resistant faceplate screws and the weatherproof gasket are included no matter which you pick.
6) We need a wall switch labeled for emergency egress rather than "PUSH TO OPEN" - what should we order instead of the DynaLock 6176?
The 6176 faceplate is silkscreened "PUSH TO OPEN", so it reads as a door release rather than an emergency device. If the label needs to say emergency, the Securitron EEB is an emergency exit push button with interchangeable LED lenses, and the ACSI 1320-1-MOM-ER is a pushbutton switch marked "Emergency Release". Both carry emergency wording on the face; the 6176 remains the choice where you want a plain release legend on a weather-sealed button.
7) What is a comparable illuminated push button to the DynaLock 6176 if the opening is indoors and does not need a weatherproof rating?
The DynaLock 6176 is a weatherproof pushbutton with a green LED backlit button and a faceplate silkscreened "PUSH TO OPEN", built with a sealed body for outdoor exposure. For a protected interior opening where sealing is not a factor, the Securitron PB4L is an illuminated halo push button with a stainless button, and the Securitron PB5 is a medium round illuminated push button. Both give you the lit-button look without the weather sealing the 6176 is designed around, so choose the 6176 when the device sits on an exterior wall, gate post, or wash-down area.
8) The 6176 is momentary - what do I use if the door needs to stay unlocked until someone switches it back?
All DynaLock 6176 models are momentary-action SPDT double-break, so the contact transfers only while the button is pressed. For a hold state, the RCI 908 Series electronic exit button with red EXIT text is offered in a maintained version, and the RCI 919 Series rotary release button is also offered with maintained operation. Those latch in position rather than releasing on button release, which is what you want for a hold-open or maintained unlock; the 6176 covers momentary release and request-to-exit duty.
9) What is an alternative to the DynaLock 6176 for an ADA door operator actuator?
The 6176 is a 3/4 inch raised dome button on a single-gang plate, sized for a finger press rather than a palm or elbow. Where the actuator needs to be struck with a hand or elbow, the RCI 950 Series round push plate carries a handicap symbol and a momentary switch in satin stainless steel. Use the 950HP where you want a large marked actuator plate, and the 6176 where a compact weather-sealed release button on a single-gang box fits the opening.
10) The mullion on our aluminum storefront is too narrow for a single-gang plate - what goes in instead of the DynaLock 6176?
The 6176 mounts on a single-gang box, which needs more face width than a narrow aluminum stile usually gives you. The Trine 342 is a narrow style electric door switch made for that condition. Keep the 6176 where you have single-gang wall or back-box mounting and want the weather sealing and "PUSH TO OPEN" legend; go to the 342 when the device has to live on a narrow mullion.
11) What is the difference between the DynaLock 6176 and the other 6170 Series pushbuttons?
The 6176 is the model with the faceplate silkscreened PUSH TO OPEN. Everything else about it is common to the series: 3/4 inch white thermoplastic raised dome button with green LED backlight, sealed aluminum body, single-gang plate, momentary SPDT double break. Pick the model by the wording you want on the plate; the electrical and environmental specs do not change.
12) Do I need the anti-tamper switch option on an exterior pushbutton?
On a publicly accessible exterior wall or gate post, it is worth adding. The anti-tamper switch version of the 6176 gives you a signal back to the panel if the faceplate is pulled, which the tamper-resistant faceplate screws alone will not do. On a button inside a secured courtyard or a staff-only area, the standard version without the tamper switch is usually enough.
13) Should I use a weatherproof pushbutton like the DynaLock 6176 or a push plate for an exterior door release?
It comes down to who uses it and where it sits. The 6176 is a small 3/4 inch sealed dome button in a single-gang plate, sealed to IP68 and built for direct weather exposure, so it suits an exterior release or request-to-exit control on doors and gates. A large round push plate such as the RCI 950 Series with the handicap symbol is the one you want where users need a big target they can hit with an elbow or a forearm on an accessible opening. Indoor-only applications do not need the weatherproofing at all and are usually served by a standard interior button like the Securitron PB3 or PB4L Series.
14) Will the DynaLock 6176 fit on a narrow aluminum door stile?
No. The 6176 is a single-gang faceplate device meant to mount in a wall box beside the opening, not on the door itself. For a narrow aluminum stile you need a narrow-style switch such as the Trine 342 narrow style electric door switch.
15) Is the Securitron PB3 a substitute for the DynaLock 6176?
They fill the same role as request-to-exit or release push buttons, but they are not the same device. The DynaLock 6176 is a weatherproof pushbutton with a sealed aluminum body, weatherproof faceplate gasket, tamper-resistant faceplate screws, and a field-selectable 12/24 VDC green LED backlit button, with a faceplate reading "PUSH TO OPEN". The Securitron PB3 is a push button series without that weatherproof construction. If the button is going outside or into a wash-down or high-humidity space, the 6176 is the one built for it; the PB3 suits dry interior locations.
16) We want release restricted to authorized staff rather than an open push button like the DynaLock 6176 - what is the alternative?
The 6176 is a push-to-operate button, so anyone at the door can release it, though it does offer an anti-tamper switch option and ships with tamper-resistant faceplate screws. If actuation itself must be restricted, the ACSI 1310-1 is a mortise keyswitch, which requires a key to operate. Use the keyswitch for controlled release points and the 6176 where free egress or public request-to-exit is intended.
17) Can I use the RCI 909F-MO rocker switch in place of the DynaLock 6176?
They are different actuators. The DynaLock 6176 is a momentary dome pushbutton on a weather-sealed single-gang faceplate with an LED backlit button and a brushed stainless steel US32D finish. The RCI 909 Series 909F-MO is a flush mount momentary rocker switch rated 250VAC 10A in a beige finish. Both are momentary, so the release logic matches, but the 909F-MO is a rocker rather than a dome button and comes in beige, which will not match a stainless hardware set.
18) What finish is the DynaLock 6176 faceplate, and will it match my other exit hardware?
Brushed stainless steel, US32D, which is the standard satin stainless finish used on most commercial door hardware and the same finish family as satin stainless push plates and exit buttons elsewhere in the building. The button itself is a white thermoplastic dome against that plate, backlit green.
19) Is the DynaLock 6176 rated for industrial and institutional use, not just light duty?
It is a commercial-grade switch assembly, with the thermoplastic button integrated into a fully sealed aluminum body. DynaLock lists the 6170 Series for momentary release and request-to-exit control of electric locks on doors and gates across commercial, industrial and institutional applications, and it is made in the USA.
