DynaLock 6174 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can the DynaLock 6174 exit pushbutton be mounted outdoors on a gate or exterior door?
That is what the 6174 is built for. The button assembly is sealed against moisture and dust, rated IP68 water-tight to 1 meter immersion, IP64 moisture-proof against splashing from any direction, and IP64 dust-tight. Operating range runs from -67F to +185F, so it holds up in unheated or exposed locations. A weatherproof faceplate gasket ships with it. If you are surface mounting on a wall, gate post, or bollard with no box already in place, order it with the weatherproof surface back box option.
2) What electrical box does the DynaLock 6174 weatherproof pushbutton mount to?
It mounts on a standard single-gang box. Flush installs into an existing single-gang box in the wall; for surface work where there is no box, specify the BBX weatherproof surface back box option and it comes with one. Tamper-resistant faceplate screws and standard mounting screws are both included, along with the faceplate gasket.
3) Is the DynaLock 6174 pushbutton 12V or 24V, and does it need a separate supply for the LED?
The green LED backlight is field selectable for 12 or 24VDC, so one part covers both common access control supplies with no separate SKU. The switch itself is a dry contact independent of the LED, rated 3 A at 115VAC, momentary-action SPDT double break (Form Z).
4) Will a momentary SPDT double break button like the DynaLock 6174 work with a maglock and a fail-secure strike on the same job?
Yes. Form Z double break contacts give you both a normally closed and a normally open path, so the same button can break the power path to a magnetic lock and simultaneously close a circuit to an electric strike, a timer, or an alarm shunt input. The action is momentary only, meaning the door releases while the button is held and restores when released. If your application needs the contact to stay latched until it is reset, this is the wrong button.
5) What is the difference between the DynaLock 6174 pushbutton and the Securitron PB4L or PB5 illuminated push buttons?
All three are illuminated request-to-exit style push buttons for electric locks. The DynaLock 6174 is a weatherproof unit built for outdoor exposure: its 3/4 inch white thermoplastic raised dome button is rated IP68 water-tight to 1 meter immersion, IP64 moisture-proof and IP64 dust-tight, it ships with a weatherproof faceplate gasket and tamper-resistant screws, and it operates from -67F to +185F, with the faceplate silkscreened EXIT/SORTIE in English and French. The Securitron PB4L is an illuminated halo button with a stainless push button, and the PB5 is a medium round illuminated push button - both are interior-style station buttons rather than gasketed weatherproof assemblies. For a gate, loading dock, or any exterior wall, the 6174 is the one specified for the exposure.
6) I need a bilingual EXIT button for a Canadian job. Is there an alternative to the DynaLock 6174?
The DynaLock 6174 is the bilingual choice - its faceplate is silkscreened EXIT/SORTIE, which satisfies English and French labeling on the same plate, and it is finished in brushed stainless steel US32D. Among the alternatives, the RCI 908 series electronic exit button is marked with red EXIT text only, and the Securitron EEB is labeled as an emergency exit push button. If the bilingual marking is a requirement rather than a preference, specify the 6174.
7) The 6174 is momentary. What should I use if I need the release to latch and stay released?
The DynaLock 6174 is momentary-action on all models, with SPDT double-break (Form Z) contacts rated 3 A at 115VAC, so the lock releases only while the button is held. For a maintained action, the RCI 908 series electronic exit button is offered with maintained operation, and the RCI 919 rotary release button is also a maintained device in satin aluminum. Use one of those where the opening has to be held unlocked until someone resets the switch.
8) Does the DynaLock 6174 exit button come with a tamper switch?
An anti-tamper switch is an option, not standard. The 6174 is ordered in four configurations: with or without the anti-tamper switch, and with or without the weatherproof surface back box. On exterior and gate installations where the plate is reachable from the unsecured side, the tamper switch is the one worth adding so a removal attempt reports back to the panel.
9) What does the 6174 faceplate say, and is it bilingual for Canadian jobs?
The 6174 faceplate is silkscreened EXIT/SORTIE, so it satisfies English and French signage on the same plate for Canadian and bilingual facilities. The plate is brushed stainless steel in US32D, which matches the satin stainless trim most commercial openings already carry.
10) What is the difference between the DynaLock 6174 and an indoor exit button like the RCI 908 or Securitron PB3?
Sealing is the whole difference. The 6174 is a weatherproof assembly rated IP68 and IP64 with a gasketed plate, built for exterior walls, gates, loading docks, and wash-down areas. Interior request-to-exit buttons such as the RCI 908 Series exit button or the Securitron PB3 Series push buttons are for protected indoor openings. Also note the action: the 6174 is momentary only, while the RCI 908-RE-MA is a maintained-operation button that stays actuated until reset.
11) I need an accessible door actuator for a wheelchair user, not an exit button. Is the 6174 right?
No. The 6174 is a 3/4 inch dome pushbutton meant as a momentary release or request-to-exit control, not a barrier-free actuator. For that use look at a large push plate such as the RCI 950 Series round push plate with the handicap symbol, a momentary switch in satin stainless.
12) Can the DynaLock 6174 be used as the emergency release button on a maglock door?
It can serve as a momentary release for electric locks, but it is not labelled as an emergency device. The plate reads EXIT/SORTIE. Where the authority having jurisdiction wants a distinct, identifiable emergency release, use a button marked for it, such as the Securitron EEB emergency exit push button or the ACSI 1320-1-MOM-ER pushbutton switch marked Emergency Release.
13) Will the 6174 fit on a narrow aluminum storefront mullion?
Not on a narrow stile. The 6174 is a single-gang faceplate assembly and needs wall or box surface to land on. For releasing a door from a narrow aluminum frame member, a narrow-style switch such as the Trine 342 narrow style electric door switch is the right form factor.
14) Is a Securitron EEB or an ACSI 1320-1-MOM-ER an equivalent substitute for the DynaLock 6174?
They are not interchangeable in intent. The Securitron EEB is an emergency exit push button with interchangeable LED lenses, and the ACSI 1320-1-MOM-ER is a pushbutton switch marked Emergency Release - both are labeled for emergency use, typically under a cover or in a break-glass style application. The DynaLock 6174 is a general momentary release and request-to-exit control marked EXIT/SORTIE, with a green LED backlit button field selectable for 12 or 24VDC. If the drawing calls for an emergency release station, the wording on the 6174 plate will not satisfy it.
15) What is a simpler indoor alternative to the DynaLock 6174 weatherproof pushbutton?
If the station is inside and does not need the gasketed, IP68/IP64 rated assembly of the DynaLock 6174, the Securitron PB3 series push buttons are a plain non-illuminated station, and the Trine 342 is a narrow style electric door switch for tight frame or mullion mounting. The 6174 mounts on a single-gang box and can be ordered with a weatherproof surface back box when there is no box in the wall, which is the case its design is built around.
16) We need an ADA push plate at an exterior door, not a small button. What should I look at instead of the DynaLock 6174?
The DynaLock 6174 uses a 3/4 inch diameter raised dome button on a single-gang faceplate, which is a small target. Where the spec calls for a large actuator with the accessibility symbol, the RCI 950 series round push plate with handicap symbol is a momentary switch in satin stainless steel. Keep in mind the 6174 is the unit rated IP68 water-tight to 1 meter and IP64 dust-tight with a weatherproof gasket for exterior exposure.
17) Can I use a mortise keyswitch instead of the DynaLock 6174 for releasing an exterior gate lock?
They do different jobs. The ACSI 1310-1 is a mortise keyswitch, so release requires a key and it becomes an authorized-entry device. The DynaLock 6174 is a free-egress style momentary release and request-to-exit control with a green LED backlit button, selectable for 12 or 24VDC, sealed to IP68 water-tight and IP64 dust-tight for outdoor and harsh environments. Use the keyswitch where you want to restrict who can release the lock, and the 6174 where anyone at the door should be able to.
18) How big is the button itself, and is it easy to find at night?
The actuator is a 3/4 inch diameter white thermoplastic raised dome set into a sealed aluminum body, with a green LED backlight behind it on every model. The raised dome is findable by feel with a gloved hand, and the LED makes it visible in a dark vestibule or exterior wall.
19) Is the RCI 909F-MO rocker switch a substitute for the DynaLock 6174?
Not for the same application. The RCI 909F series is a flush mount momentary rocker switch rated 250VAC 10A in a beige finish, which suits an interior control location. The DynaLock 6174 is a sealed commercial-grade pushbutton in brushed stainless steel US32D with contacts rated 3 A at 115VAC, an EXIT/SORTIE silkscreened faceplate, and an aluminum body sealed against moisture and dust for outdoor exposure. Both are momentary, but only the 6174 is built for the weather.
