B-LINE 1286 RTSC – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Can the B-Line 1286 RTSC junction box be mounted outdoors?
Yes. The Eaton B-Line 1286 RTSC is a NEMA Type 3R enclosure, which means it handles rain, sleet and snow on outdoor walls. It comes with a rain hood over the cover and plated screws so the fasteners hold up outside. It is not rated for washdown or dust-tight service, so for hosedown areas you need a Type 4 or 4X box instead.
2) Does this B-Line junction box come with knockouts already punched?
There are 4 knockouts in the bottom of the 1286 RTSC. Bottom-only knockouts are deliberate on a 3R enclosure, since entries on the top or upper sides break the rain rating. If you need side or back entries you have to punch them yourself and use raintight hubs.
3) How is the B-Line 1286 RTSC enclosure fastened to the wall?
It is a surface mount box with embossed thru holes in the back, so you fasten straight through the back pan into the wall or strut with your own hardware. The embossed holes keep the mounting fasteners off the flat of the back wall. Anchors and screws are not part of the box; pick them for your substrate. At 7.6 lb empty, two-person handling is not needed but solid anchors are, once conductors and fittings are in it.
4) How does the cover come off the 1286 RTSC, and can I get into it quickly for service?
It is a screw cover, flanged, held by plated screws. You need a driver and both hands every time you open it, and the loose cover has to go somewhere. For a panel you open often, a hinged-cover enclosure is the easier choice; the screw cover suits a box you make up once and then leave closed.
5) What is this junction box made of and will it match the other gear on my wall?
Carbon steel, 16 gauge, painted ANSI 61 grey. ANSI 61 is the standard grey used on most switchgear and industrial panels, so it lines up with adjacent equipment. Being painted steel rather than stainless, it wants an indoor or sheltered-outdoor location; for coastal or chemical exposure look at a stainless or non-metallic enclosure.
