Emtek 1143-MB – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Does the Emtek 1143 multi point trim include the multi point mortise lock body?
No. The Emtek 1143 is trim only: plates and handles. The multi point mortise lock box has to be sourced separately, usually from the door manufacturer, since it is already in the slab on most swinging patio doors. Order the trim to match the lock you have, not the other way around.
2) How do I know if Door Configuration #1 is the right Emtek multi point trim for my patio door?
Configuration #1 means the cylinder sits below the handle and uses an American style cylinder, with 3-5/8 inch center-to-center between the handle and the cylinder hole. Measure that spacing on your existing trim or on the door prep. If your prep puts the cylinder above the handle, or the spacing is different, a different Emtek configuration number is required.
3) What do I have to specify when ordering the Emtek 1143 trim?
Four things: finish (Flat Black Bronze or Medium Bronze), lever style (Medici, Napoli, Octagon or Padua), handing (right or left), and your door thickness. Handing and lever style are both required selections, so a wrong handing call means a wrong part on the door.
4) Is there a keyed version, or does the 1143 only have a thumbturn inside?
The 1143 is the non-keyed version: American style thumbturn on the interior, no interior key cylinder. It's the usual choice for a patio door where you want to throw the multi point from inside by hand. If you need key access from both sides, you want a keyed Emtek multi point trim instead.
5) Will these bronze plates match my other Emtek Tuscany door hardware?
Yes, within the Tuscany Bronze collection. The plates are lost wax cast bronze in the Tuscany style at 2 x 10-1/2 inches, and the trim can be ordered with any lost wax cast bronze Tuscany lever, so entry doors and interior doors can be carried through in the same casting and finish.
6) Will a 2 inch wide plate cover my existing patio door prep?
The Tuscany plates measure 2 x 10-1/2 inches. On a narrow patio door stile that width matters: measure your stile face and the footprint of the trim you are removing. If the old plate was wider, screw holes or wear marks may show around the new plate.
7) What kind of cylinder does the exterior side of this Emtek trim take?
American cylinder classification, positioned below the handle. That means a standard mortise-style American cylinder rather than a European profile, so if your door currently has a Euro profile cylinder the prep and cylinder both differ and this Configuration #1 trim will not line up.
8) Do the levers on this Emtek multi point trim sag over time?
Each of these multi point trims now ships with Emtek's Spring Assist, which returns the lever to neutral and keeps the handle from drooping, a common complaint on older patio door trim.
9) Is the Emtek 1143 trim suitable for a commercial entrance?
It's classified residential. For swinging patio and residential entry doors it's the right product; for a commercial opening with traffic and code requirements, look at a Grade 1 commercial mortise lock and trim instead. Nothing here is electronic either, so it's a mechanical thumbturn function only.
