Emtek 1181-US15 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Does the Emtek 1181 multi point trim include the multi point lock body, or just the handles and plates?
Trim only. The 1181 set gives you the plates, the handles, and the cylinder. The multi point mortise lock box itself is not included, so if you are replacing a whole system you still need the lock body that matches the door. This is the part to buy when the multipoint gearbox in the door is fine and the handles or plates are worn, bent, or the wrong finish.
2) Will Emtek 1181 trim fit my Andersen or Marvin patio door?
Emtek lists the 1181 Concord trim against multipoint doors from Atrium, G-U, KML by Andersen, Andersen, Marvin Integrity, Paddock Lockmaster, and Superior. The deciding number is the hole spacing: the 1181 is Door Configuration #1 with 3-5/8 inch center-to-center between the handle hub and the cylinder. Measure from the center of the existing handle spindle hole to the center of the key cylinder hole on your door. If that comes out at 3-5/8 inches with the cylinder below the handle, this trim lines up.
3) What is the difference between cylinder above the handle and cylinder below the handle on Emtek multipoint trim?
It is not a style choice, it is the hole layout already drilled into your door. The 1181 is the below-handle version: the key cylinder sits under the lever at 3-5/8 inch center-to-center. If the key on your existing door sits above the lever, the 1181 plate will not line up with the prep and you want the above-handle configuration instead. Check the door before you pick, not the picture.
4) Do I have to specify handing when ordering the Emtek 1181 Concord trim?
Yes, handing is required, right hand or left hand. Stand outside the door, on the side the key goes in: if the hinges are on your right, it is right hand. Get this wrong and the lever throws the wrong way and the cylinder lands on the wrong face. Lever style is also a required choice, so you are picking handing, lever, and finish together on the same order.
5) Can I key the Emtek 1181 to match my existing Schlage or Kwikset keys?
The 1181 takes an American cylinder in single cylinder keyed entry function, and it is offered in two keyways: Schlage (the standard here) and Weiser WR5, which is the Kwikset-family keyway. Pick the one your building already runs on and it can be keyed to your existing code, or keyed alike across multiple doors if you are ordering several. Keyed different is the other option if each opening should carry its own key.
6) Single cylinder multipoint trim: is there a key on the inside too?
No. The 1181 is single cylinder, so the key works the outside only and the inside handle operates without a key. That is the normal choice for a swinging patio door in a house. If your local code or your own security plan calls for a key on both faces, single cylinder trim will not give you that.
7) How big are the Concord plates on the Emtek 1181, and will they cover my old trim?
The Concord plates measure 2 x 10-1/2 inches. That is a narrow, long escutcheon, so it covers a vertical run of the stile but only two inches across. If the trim coming off is wider than two inches, the old screw holes or finish shadow will show at the edges. Concord is the squared-off, rectangular plate profile in Emtek's brass collection.
8) Which levers can I put on the Emtek 1181 multipoint trim?
Any Emtek brass lever, and the choice is required at order time. That covers the modern bar shapes (L-Square, T-Bar and R-Bar in Faceted, Hammered, Knurled, Tribeca, Straight Knurled and White Marble), the classical set (Athena, Helios, Hermes, Poseidon, Argos, Hercules, Mercury, Triton), the European names (Luzern, Stuttgart, Basel, Geneva, Sion), and the traditional profiles (Cortina, Milano, Merrimack, Turino, Coventry, Elan, Ribbon and Reed, Rope, Rustic, Santa Fe, Wembley, Arts and Crafts, Hammered, plus Aston, Breslin, Dumont, Freestone, Manning, Myles, Spencer). Pick the lever that matches the interior door hardware already in the house.
9) My patio door handles sag and droop. Does the Emtek 1181 fix that?
It does. The 1181 trim carries Emtek's spring assist, which returns the lever to horizontal and stops the droop you get on older multipoint handles once the gearbox spring tires. Sagging levers on a patio door are usually the trim, not the lock body, which is why replacing trim alone often solves it.
10) What finishes does the Emtek 1181 Concord trim come in?
Eight, all on solid brass: Oil Rubbed Bronze (US10B), Satin Nickel (US15), Pewter (US15A), Flat Black (US19), Polished Chrome (US26), Polished Brass Lifetime (US3), Unlacquered Brass (US3NL), and French Antique (US7). Every one of those is available in either keyway. Worth knowing on the two brass options: US3 is a lifetime coated finish that stays bright, while US3NL is left raw and will patina with handling and weather, which matters on an exterior patio door.
11) Is Emtek 1181 multipoint trim rated for a commercial building entrance?
Emtek classes the 1181 as residential hardware, and it is built for swinging patio doors. For a multi-family unit's own patio door it is the right part. For a commercial entrance carrying public traffic, a property manager should be specifying commercial-grade entrance hardware instead.
12) Does the Emtek 1181 need a specific door thickness, and is it electronic?
It is a mechanical, key-operated trim with no electronics and no batteries. Door thickness is an entry field on the order rather than a fixed value, so measure the slab and give the number when you order, since a multipoint door can run thicker than a standard 1-3/4 inch slab.
