Emtek 1425-FB – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Does the Emtek 1425 multi point trim include the multi point lock itself?
No. The 1425 is trim only: the plates and handles for a swinging patio door. The multi point mortise lock box is a separate order. If you're replacing worn handles on a door that already has a working multi point mechanism inside it, trim only is what you want. If the mechanism itself is failing, you need the lock body too.
2) Which patio door brands does the Emtek 1425 Config #4 trim fit?
Emtek references this configuration against Ashland, G-U, Caradco, JELD-WEN, JELD-WEN Custom Collection (formerly Pozzi), Marvin, PGT, Premium Collection (formerly Norco), and Weathershield doors. Those manufacturers used more than one prep over the years, so the 3-5/8 inch center-to-center on your actual door is what confirms it, not the brand badge alone.
3) Will the Emtek 1425 trim line up with the holes in my existing multi point door?
The deciding number is the center-to-center: 3-5/8 inches between the handle spindle and the cylinder hole, with the cylinder above the handle. That's Emtek's Door Configuration #4 layout. Measure your existing door's spacing from the middle of the handle hub to the middle of the keyhole. If it isn't 3-5/8 inches, you need a different Emtek door configuration, not this one.
4) What does dummy pair mean on the Emtek 1425, and is it the right function for my patio door?
Dummy means the handles don't operate anything. Both sides are fixed pulls, no latch retraction and no key. That's the correct trim for the inactive leaf of a French or double patio door, the panel that stays put on flush bolts while the other one is used. For the active leaf that actually locks and unlatches, you need a keyed or handleset function in the same style, not this dummy pair.
5) What do I need to specify when ordering Emtek 1425 Sandcast Bronze trim?
Three things beyond the finish. Lever style, from ten Sandcast Bronze levers: Aurora, Bryce, Cimarron, Cody, Durango, Lariat, Mariposa, Montrose, Teton, and Yuma. Handing, right or left. And your door thickness. Finish is Flat Black Bronze, Medium Bronze, or Tumbled White Bronze.
6) Do I have to cut new holes in my door to mount the Emtek 1425 trim?
No door prep is required. The 1425 plates surface mount over the door face. On a replacement job that keeps the existing multi point mechanism, you're pulling the old trim and setting these in its place.
7) Does handing matter on a dummy patio door trim?
Yes, handing is a required choice on the 1425. Even though the levers don't operate a latch, the plate is asymmetric around the cylinder opening and the lever throw has a direction, so a left hand set on a right hand door reads backwards. Stand outside the door: if the hinges are on your right, it's a right hand door.
8) How big are the Emtek 1425 Arched plates, and will they cover the marks left by my old trim?
The plates measure 2 x 10 inches in the Arched profile. That's a fairly slim escutcheon, so if your old hardware used a wider or longer backplate you'll see the outline of it on the door face. Worth checking against the existing plate before you order, especially on a painted or stained patio door you don't plan to refinish.
9) Can I use the Emtek 1425 on a commercial building entrance?
Emtek classifies the 1425 as residential hardware. It's built for swinging patio doors on homes and residential units. For a commercial entrance under a traffic or code requirement, this isn't the trim to spec.
10) Is the Emtek 1425 solid bronze, and how will the finish age outdoors?
Sandcast solid bronze, both substrate and material. Sandcast bronze is a living finish, so the Flat Black Bronze, Medium Bronze, and Tumbled White Bronze finishes develop patina with handling and weather rather than staying uniform. Casting texture also varies slightly piece to piece, which is normal for sandcast and not a defect. If you want every opening in a building to look identical for years, a plated finish is the safer call.
11) If I add a keyed version later, what cylinder does the Emtek Config #4 trim take?
The Config #4 layout uses an American cylinder, positioned above the handle. The 1425 itself is the dummy pair and takes no cylinder, so keying only comes into play on the active leaf hardware you pair it with. If you're standardizing a house on one key, that American cylinder format is what the locksmith needs to know.
12) Is the Emtek 1425 electronic or smart lock compatible?
No, it's mechanical trim with no electronic option. Fixed dummy handles on plates, nothing to wire and nothing to pair with an app.
