1) Does the Emtek 14B3 multi point trim include the multi point lock itself?
No. The 14B3 is trim only: brass plates and handles. The multi point mortise lock box is a separate purchase, so if you are replacing a whole system you need the gearbox from the door manufacturer as well. What you get here is the exterior and interior plates plus the lever set that mounts to an existing multi point lock.
2) Which patio door brands does the Emtek Configuration #4 multi point trim fit?
Emtek lists Configuration #4 trim against Ashland, G-U, Caradco, JELD-WEN, JELD-WEN Custom Collection (formerly Pozzi), Marvin, PGT, Premium Collection (formerly Norco) and Weathershield doors. Configuration is the thing to confirm before anything else, because it sets where the cylinder and spindle holes land. Measure your existing plate: Config #4 runs a 3-5/8 inch center-to-center between handle and cylinder, with the cylinder above the handle.
3) How do I know if my swinging patio door needs Configuration #4 trim or a different config?
Take the old plate off and measure the distance from the center of the handle spindle to the center of the cylinder hole. Config #4 trim is drilled at 3-5/8 inches center-to-center with the cylinder sitting above the handle. If your holes measure anything else, or the cylinder is below the handle, you need a different Emtek configuration, not this one. The plate itself is 2 x 10 inches, so also check that the existing plate footprint is covered.
4) Is the Emtek 14B3 keyed on the outside, and what is on the inside?
The 14B3 is the non-keyed version: thumbturn on the interior, no key cylinder supplied. It is prepped for an American style cylinder above the handle, so if you later want key access from outside you are adding an American mortise cylinder into that prep. For a keyed set out of the box, look at the keyed variant of the same Config #4 modern trim rather than adding onto this one.
5) What do I have to specify when ordering Emtek 14B3 multi point trim?
Three things are required at order time and one is optional. Lever style is required, chosen from 51 brass lever designs, from the modern L-Square, T-Bar and R-Bar bars in faceted, hammered, knurled, Tribeca, straight knurled and white marble, through Athena, Helios, Hermes, Luzern, Poseidon, Stuttgart and the rest. Handing is required, right or left. Finish is required, seven options. Door thickness is a free text field, so give the actual measured thickness of your patio door slab.
6) What finishes does the Emtek 14B3 brass trim come in?
Seven, all on solid brass: Oil Rubbed Bronze (US10B), Polished Nickel Lifetime (US14), Satin Nickel (US15), Flat Black (US19), Polished Chrome (US26), Unlacquered Brass (US3NL) and Satin Brass (US4). If you are matching other openings in the house, note that Unlacquered Brass is a living finish that will patina, while the Lifetime Polished Nickel is the one that holds its appearance. Any of the 51 brass levers can be ordered against this plate, so the lever and plate finish stay consistent across a set of doors.
7) Can I use the Emtek 14B3 modern trim on a sliding patio door?
No. This is trim for a swinging patio door with a multi point mortise lock in the stile. Sliding patio doors use a different lock body and a flush pull, so none of this plate hardware applies. If the door swings and has a multi point lock with a 3-5/8 inch handle-to-cylinder spacing, this is the right family.
8) Is Emtek multi point trim rated for a commercial entry or a hotel corridor?
No. Emtek lists this brass multi point trim as residential hardware for swinging patio doors. For a commercial opening on a hospitality or institutional project, specify a Grade 1 or Grade 2 commercial mortise or cylindrical lockset instead, one carrying an ANSI/BHMA grade on its own spec sheet. The 14B3 is decorative brass patio trim, not graded door hardware.
9) Is the Emtek 14B3 solid brass or plated zinc?
Solid brass. Both the plate material and the substrate are brass, and the levers that pair with it come from Emtek's brass collection. That matters on an exterior patio door, where a plated pot metal trim tends to bubble and pit at the weather side within a few seasons.
10) Will the Emtek 14B3 modern plate match my other Emtek door hardware?
The 14B3 plate is Emtek's Modern style, a 2 x 10 inch contemporary rectangular escutcheon. It reads with the squared modern lever families (L-Square, T-Bar and R-Bar) and the contemporary levers like Athena, Helios and Poseidon. If the rest of the house is on traditional Emtek plates with levers like Rope, Ribbon and Reed or Rustic, those levers can still be ordered against this plate, but the plate itself will read modern next to a traditional rosette.
11) Does the Emtek 14B3 need power or wiring?
No wiring. The 14B3 is fully mechanical: lever, spring assist, and an interior thumbturn. Nothing to run to it and nothing to fail when the power drops. If you want keyless entry on a multi point patio door, that is a different Emtek trim built for an electronic keypad, not this one.
