Emtek 16B1-US19 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Does the Emtek 16B1 multi point trim include the multi point lock body?
No. The 16B1 is trim only: plates, handles, and cylinder. The multi point mortise lock box is a separate purchase, so if you're replacing a whole system you still need the lock body sized for your door. If your existing multi point mortise lock is sound and you just want new handles and plates, trim only is exactly what you want.
2) What is Door Configuration #6 on Emtek multi point trim, and how do I know my patio door takes it?
Configuration #6 refers to the hole pattern in the door: on the 16B1 the handle hub and the American cylinder hub sit 3-5/8 inches center to center, with the cylinder BELOW the handle. Emtek multi point trims are sold by configuration because the prep is already cut into the door slab. Measure center of the existing handle spindle hole to center of the cylinder hole. If it's 3-5/8 inches with the key below the lever, config #6 is your pattern. If the cylinder sits above the handle, or the spacing is different, you need a different configuration.
3) Will Emtek 16B1 trim fit a Milgard or Pella swinging patio door?
Milgard and Pella are the reference door manufacturers for this trim. That said, the deciding factor is the prep, not the brand: the 16B1 matches configuration #6, a 3-5/8 inch center-to-center between lever hub and cylinder with the cylinder below the lever, and the plates are 2 x 10 inches. Confirm those against the door slab before ordering, because both manufacturers used more than one multi point prep over the years.
4) Do I have to specify handing when ordering Emtek 16B1 multi point trim?
Handing is required, right hand or left hand, and it's not field reversible on the order form. Stand outside the door, on the side you'd put a key in. If the hinges are on your right, it's right hand. Get this wrong and the lever and key orientation come out backwards on the slab.
5) What do I have to pick besides finish when I order the Emtek 16B1?
Four choices are mandatory: lever style (51 Emtek levers, from the L-Square, T-Bar and R-Bar modern bars through Athena, Poseidon, Milano, Rope and Arts and Crafts), handing, keyway (Schlage standard or Weiser WR5), and keying (keyed different or keyed alike). Door thickness is an optional entry, and worth filling in if your slab is anything other than typical. The plates and cylinder come as a set, so once those are picked the trim ships complete.
6) Can I key my Emtek patio door trim to match my existing house keys?
Yes, within the keyway families offered. The 16B1 takes an American cylinder in either a Schlage keyway (the standard option) or a Weiser WR5 keyway, so if the rest of your entry hardware is Schlage C or Weiser, one key can run the whole house. Keying is single cylinder, key outside and thumbturn or lever inside. You can order keyed alike across multiple units, and there's a field for keying to a specific code if your property is already on a master system.
7) Schlage or Weiser keyway on Emtek multi point trim, which one should I order?
Pick whichever matches the keys already on the property. Schlage is the standard option on the 16B1 and is the right call if your entry locks are Schlage or you're starting fresh. The Weiser WR5 keyway is there for homes already running Weiser or Kwikset-family keys. Both use the same American cylinder body, so the choice is purely about which key you want in your pocket, not about fit or function.
8) Is Emtek 16B1 trim solid brass, and which finishes hold up outdoors?
The plates and levers are solid brass, and any Emtek brass lever can be paired with the 16B1. Seven finishes are offered: Oil Rubbed Bronze (US10B), Polished Nickel Lifetime (US14), Satin Nickel (US15), Flat Black (US19), Polished Chrome (US26), Unlacquered Brass (US3NL), and Satin Brass (US4). Note that Unlacquered Brass and Oil Rubbed Bronze are living finishes, they'll patina with handling and weather, which some clients want and others complain about. Polished Nickel Lifetime is the one that stays put.
9) Do I need to order multiple Emtek multi point trims for a French door pair?
Yes, one per active leaf. The 16B1 is a single trim set (plates, handles, cylinder) for one door, handed left or right. On a pair where both leaves are active you order two, each with its own handing, and put them on the keyed alike option so one key runs both. An inactive leaf typically carries flush bolts or a dummy trim rather than a keyed set.
10) Is the Emtek 16B1 an electronic or smart lock?
No, it's fully mechanical. The 16B1 is keyed trim with an American cylinder, single cylinder function, no keypad, no motor, no wiring. If you're specifying a connected entry for a rental turnover or a short-term rental, this isn't it.
