Emtek 1821-FB – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Does the Emtek 1821 multi point trim include the multi point lock itself?
No. The Emtek 1821 is trim only: plates, handles, and the cylinder. The multi point mortise lock box has to be ordered separately, so if the door does not already have a multi point gear in the stile, the trim alone will not lock anything. Common case is a swinging patio door that already has the lock body installed and needs new handle trim.
2) What does Emtek Door Configuration #8 mean and how do I know my door takes it?
Configuration #8 describes the layout of the trim: a 2 x 10 inch arched plate with the American cylinder above the lever and 5-1/4 inches center-to-center between them. Emtek's multi point configurations are matched to the door manufacturer's prep, and the 1821 is referenced to Neuma Doors. Measure the existing prep from cylinder center to handle hub center; if it is not 5-1/4 inches with the cylinder on top, you need a different configuration number.
3) Which keyway does the Emtek 1821 cylinder come in, and can I key it to my existing keys?
Two keyway choices: Schlage (the standard) or Weiser WR5. It takes an American cylinder in a single cylinder keyed entry function, meaning key outside, thumbturn or inside lever release. You can order keyed alike across multiple doors or keyed different, and there is a field to key to an existing code, so matching a house or building key already on a Schlage or Weiser system is straightforward as long as the keyway matches.
4) What lever styles can I put on Emtek sandcast bronze multi point trim?
Ten sandcast bronze levers pair with the 1821 plates: Aurora, Bryce, Cimarron, Cody, Durango, Lariat, Mariposa, Montrose, Teton and Yuma. Lever choice is required at order time. Any sandcast bronze lever in the collection will mount, so you can match the patio door to the passage and privacy sets already in the house.
5) Will the Emtek 1821 fix a sagging patio door lever?
Yes. The 1821 trim ships with Emtek's spring assist, which returns the lever to horizontal and stops the droop you get on older multi point handles once the lock body spring gives up. If the sag is in the trim rather than the gear, replacing the trim solves it; if the multi point lock body itself is failing to throw, that is a separate part.
6) Is Emtek multi point trim rated for commercial entrances?
The 1821 is a residential product, built for swinging patio doors in homes. For a commercial entrance under real traffic, a Grade 1 mortise or cylindrical lockset is the right direction rather than residential multi point patio trim.
7) What finishes does the Emtek 1821 sandcast bronze trim come in?
Three: Flat Black Bronze (FB), Medium Bronze (MB) and Tumbled White Bronze (TWB). All three are available with either the Schlage or Weiser keyway. These are sandcast bronze, a living finish, so they will patina with handling and weather rather than staying uniform, which is the point of the Rustic Living look.
8) Do I need to give the door thickness when ordering Emtek 1821 trim?
Door thickness is an optional entry on the order, used to size the cylinder and spindle to your slab. Patio door slabs vary, so if yours is anything other than a standard 1-3/4 inch commercial thickness, state it. The trim itself is a mechanical set with no electronic components, so there is nothing else to size.
