Emtek 1851-FB – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Does the Emtek 1851 multi point trim include the multi point lock itself?
No. The 1851 is trim only: plates, handles, and the cylinder. The multi point mortise lock box has to be sourced separately, so if you are replacing a whole mechanism you need the lock body plus this trim set. Levers are chosen separately as well, from the Sandcast Bronze lever range.
2) What is Door Configuration #8 on Emtek multi point trim, and how do I know my door needs it?
Configuration #8 is the Emtek layout with the cylinder hub ABOVE the handle, with 5-1/4 inch center-to-center between the cylinder hub and the lever hub. The prep in your door and the multi point lock box you already have determine the configuration, so measure hub to hub on the existing gear and confirm the cylinder sits above the lever. If your cylinder falls below the lever, or the spacing is not 5-1/4 inches, a different configuration is the one you want.
3) Will the Emtek 1851 trim work on a Neuma swinging patio door?
Neuma Doors is the referenced door manufacturer for this trim, so the 1851 is built for that prep in Configuration #8 with a 5-1/4 inch hub center-to-center. It is swinging patio door hardware, not sliding. Confirm your Neuma door was prepped for the cylinder-above-handle layout before ordering.
4) Do I have to order a lever separately with the Emtek 1851 multi point trim, and which ones fit?
Lever style is a required selection on the 1851 and the set works with any Sandcast Bronze lever. The choices are Aurora, Bryce, Cimarron, Cody, Durango, Lariat, Mariposa, Montrose, Teton, and Yuma. You also have to specify handing, right or left, when you order.
5) Is the Emtek 1851 handed, and what happens if I order the wrong hand?
Handing matters. Right hand and left hand are separate builds and you pick one at order time. Stand outside the door: if the hinges are on your right it is a right hand door. Ordering the wrong hand puts the lever throw and the cylinder orientation backwards on the opening.
6) Can I key the Emtek 1851 to my existing Schlage or Weiser house keys?
Yes, within those two keyways. The cylinder ships in either the Schlage keyway (the standard option) or the Weiser WR5 keyway, and you can order keyed alike across multiple units or keyed different. There is also a keying-to-code field, so if your locksmith or builder gave you a key code the cylinders can be cut to it at no charge.
7) Is the Emtek 1851 single cylinder or double cylinder, and is there a key on the inside?
Single cylinder. The key operates from the exterior only; the interior side is a lever with no keyway, using an American cylinder above the handle. For a patio door where glass sits next to the lock, a lot of buyers want double cylinder for security. This is not that setup.
8) How big are the Emtek 1851 escutcheon plates, and will they cover my existing prep?
The plates measure 1-1/2 by 11 inches in a rectangular profile. That is a narrow plate, so if you are covering wider round-corner or oval plates from previous hardware, the 1-1/2 inch width will leave the old screw holes and paint line exposed. On a door with matching narrow rectangular prep it drops in cleanly.
9) What finishes does the Emtek 1851 sandcast bronze trim come in, and will it match my other Emtek bronze hardware?
Three finishes: Flat Black Bronze (FB), Medium Bronze (MB), and Tumbled White Bronze (TWB). All three are from the Sandcast Bronze collection, so they match Emtek's other sandcast bronze levers, knobs, and plates in the same finish code. Sandcast bronze is a living finish, so pieces vary in tone and darken with handling.
10) Is the Emtek 1851 multi point trim rated for a commercial entrance or an apartment building?
It is residential hardware, sandcast bronze trim for swinging patio doors. For a commercial opening or a high-traffic multi-family entry you want a Grade 1 or Grade 2 commercial lockset instead. The 1851 suits single family homes and residential patio doors where the look of solid cast bronze matters.
11) Do I need to give the door thickness when ordering Emtek 1851 multi point trim?
There is an optional door thickness field on the order. Multi point patio doors run thicker than a standard interior door, and the spindle and cylinder tailpiece have to reach through the slab, so state your actual measured thickness there if your door is anything other than a standard slab. Measure the door edge, not the frame.
12) Do the Emtek multi point levers still sag over time?
Spring assist is built into the trim now. It returns the lever to the neutral horizontal position, which is what stops the drooping handle you see on older multi point patio door sets after a few years of use. It is included on the trim, not a separate option to specify.
13) Does the Emtek 1851 have any electronic or keypad option?
No, it is purely mechanical trim, key on the outside and lever on the inside. There is no keypad, no motor, and no wiring to run. If you want electronic access on a multi point patio door, this is not the trim to start from.
