Emtek 1861-FB – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Does the Emtek 1861 multi point trim include the multi point lock body, or just the handles and plates?
Trim only. The 1861 set gives you the plates, handles, and cylinder, and the multi point mortise lock box is not included. If you are replacing hardware on an existing swinging patio door, that works in your favor since the lock body stays in the door. On new work you have to source the multi point lock separately, and it has to match Door Configuration #8 with the cylinder hub above the handle.
2) What does Door Config #8 mean on Emtek multi point trim, and how do I know my door matches?
Configuration #8 describes the layout of the holes already bored in the door: on the 1861 the cylinder hub sits above the handle, and the center-to-center spacing between the cylinder and the handle hub is 5-1/4 inches. Measure hub to hub on your existing door or the door manufacturer's prep drawing. If your cylinder sits below the handle, or the spacing is anything other than 5-1/4 inches, this trim will not line up with the prep.
3) Will Emtek 1861 trim fit a Neuma patio door?
Neuma Doors is the reference door manufacturer for the 1861 trim, so the Configuration #8 prep with the cylinder above the handle and 5-1/4 inch hub spacing is the layout it was built around. Confirm the hub-to-hub measurement on the actual door before ordering, because a single manufacturer can ship more than one multi point prep.
4) Do I have to specify handing when ordering Emtek 1861 multi point trim?
Handing is required. The 1861 is ordered right hand or left hand, and there is no reversible option, so getting it wrong means the lever and cylinder land on the wrong side of the plate. Stand outside the door: if the hinges are on your right it is a right hand door.
5) Can I key the Emtek 1861 trim to match the Schlage or Kwikset keys already on my house?
The 1861 takes an American cylinder and ships in either a Schlage keyway (the standard option) or a Weiser WR5 keyway, so it can be keyed into an existing Schlage or Weiser/Kwikset-family system. It is a single cylinder function, meaning key outside and thumb-operated lever inside. You choose keyed alike or keyed different at no charge, and there is a field to supply an existing key code so the cylinder arrives cut to your system.
6) Does the Emtek 1861 come with the lever, or do I order the handle separately?
The lever comes with the trim, but you pick the style as part of the order. Ten Sandcast Bronze levers are offered: Aurora, Bryce, Cimarron, Cody, Durango, Lariat, Mariposa, Montrose, Teton, and Yuma. Any Sandcast Bronze lever can be paired with these plates, so you can match levers already used elsewhere in the house.
7) Do Emtek sandcast bronze multi point handles sag over time?
Spring assist is built into the 1861 trim. It returns the lever to the neutral horizontal position and is there specifically to stop the droop that heavy solid bronze levers develop on patio doors. Every current multi point trim from Emtek includes it.
8) What finishes does the Emtek 1861 sandcast bronze trim come in, and will it patina?
Three finishes: Flat Black Bronze (FB), Medium Bronze (MB), and Tumbled White Bronze (TWB). All three are on solid sandcast bronze plates and levers, not plated zinc, which is why they hold up in exterior patio door exposure. Each of the three is available with either the Schlage or the Weiser WR5 keyway.
9) How big are the Emtek 1861 escutcheon plates, and will they cover my old hardware's marks?
The plates are rectangular and measure 2 x 10 inches. That is a narrow plate, so it suits a slim patio door stile but it will not hide screw holes or wear outside that footprint left by a wider or differently shaped previous escutcheon.
10) Is Emtek 1861 multi point trim rated for a commercial entrance?
It is residential hardware, sold for swinging patio doors in homes. For a commercial multi point or storefront application you want commercial-rated locking hardware instead, not this sandcast bronze patio trim.
11) Is there a keypad or electronic version of the Emtek 1861 multi point trim?
No. The 1861 is mechanical only, keyed with an American cylinder, so there is no keypad, no motor, and no wiring to run. If you want electronic access on a multi point patio door you need an electronic multi point handleset rather than this trim.
