1) What comes in the box with the Emtek 2463 doorbell button, and do I need anything else to finish the job?
The Emtek 2463 arrives as a complete exterior push button: the Modern Rectangular brass plate, the lighted button, and matching screws. Emtek doesn't sell those screws on their own, so don't lose them during the install. The 2463 is the push button end of the system only. The chime and the low voltage transformer are separate components on a wired doorbell circuit, and the lighted button draws from that same low voltage feed, so there needs to be existing doorbell wiring at the opening.
2) I like the Emtek doorbell but not the rectangular plate. What other contemporary plate shapes are there?
The 2463 is the Modern Rectangular version of Emtek's contemporary doorbell. The same doorbell is built on five other contemporary plates, each with its own model number: 2457 with the Modern rosette, 2458 with the Disk rosette, 2459 with the Square rosette, 2460 with the Neos rosette, and 2465 with the Urban Modern rosette. Pick the model number for the shape you want; the button and finish offering carry across the family.
3) Which Emtek 2463 finish holds its look outdoors, and what does unlacquered brass do over time?
Unlacquered Brass (US3NL) is a living finish with no clear topcoat over the brass, so it darkens and patinas with weather and handling. That's the intent of it, but it will not stay bright and it will not match a lacquered brass entry set a year in. If you want the doorbell to look the same in five years as it does on day one, go with a plated finish: Satin Nickel (US15), Polished Nickel (US14), Polished Chrome (US26), Flat Black (US19), Oil Rubbed Bronze (US10B) or Satin Brass (US4).
4) I need a doorbell plate long enough to cover the hole left by the old one. What are my options in the Emtek line?
The 2463's Modern Rectangular plate is a compact rosette, so if you're covering an oversized cutout or an old intercom opening it may not reach. Emtek's STRETTO plates are the long, narrow answer: model 2440 uses a 1-1/2 inch by 5 inch plate and model 2441 uses a 1-1/2 inch by 11 inch plate. Measure the existing opening first, then choose between the two lengths.
5) My house has traditional or rustic hardware. Does Emtek make this doorbell in something other than a contemporary style?
Yes, the same doorbell is offered across Emtek's other design families, and the model number changes with the plate. American Classic runs 2400 (Regular), 2402 (Oval), 2403 (Rectangular), 2408 (#8), 2409 (Quincy), 2466 (Watford) and 2404 (Wilshire). American Designer covers 2401 (Rope), 2406 (Lancaster) and 2407 (Ribbon and Reed). For Arts and Crafts there's 2451 and 2452 (Hammered). Sandcast Bronze runs 2421 through 2425, Tuscany lost wax cast bronze covers 2411, 2412, 2414 and 2415, and Wrought Steel is 2431, 2432 and 2433. The 2463 is the contemporary Modern Rectangular plate in that same set.
6) Is the Emtek 2463 doorbell button lighted, and will the light work on my existing chime wiring?
The button is lighted, so it's visible at a dark entry. It's an electrified push button that takes its power from the doorbell circuit itself, meaning the existing low voltage feed from the chime transformer at the button location is what illuminates it. If the opening currently has a working wired button, the wiring is already there.
7) Is the Emtek 2463 doorbell suitable for an apartment building or an office entrance?
The 2463 is specified as residential hardware, and that's where it belongs: single family entries, townhomes, and residential unit doors in multifamily. For a heavy traffic commercial or institutional entrance, look for a push button rated for commercial duty instead. Solid brass build and a lighted button are the trade-offs you'd be giving up on the commercial side.
