1) Will the HES 1006CAS electric strike work with a mortise lock that has a 1 inch deadbolt?
That's exactly what the 1006C Smart Strike is built for. It accommodates a deadbolt up to 1 inch, and it will release, recapture and contain a mortise lock with a 1 inch deadbolt rather than just holding a latchbolt. Which faceplate you use decides the behavior: the A, AD and AM plates suit a normally extended 1 inch deadbolt, while the H, HD, HM, HT and HTD plates are for 1 inch deadbolts where the strike will not release while the deadbolt is thrown. Pick the plate to match your lock's deadlatch position (above, below, or center-lined with the latchbolt).
2) What faceplates come in the box with the HES 1006CAS, and do I have to order others separately?
Two package choices are sold. The standard pack ships with the ND and NM faceplates, and the other pack ships with the N-2 faceplate. All three are night-latch plates, meaning the deadbolt is used for night-latch function only: ND fits Sargent 7700 and 8100 and Yale 8700 mortise locks, NM fits Best 45H/47H and 34H-37H, Corbin/Russwin, Falcon and Sargent 7800, 8200 and 9200, and the N-2 is the 9 x 1-3/8 inch plate for wood frame applications covering Accurate, Arrow, Baldwin, Marks, Omnia, PDQ, Schlage and Yale 8700. If your lock needs a different plate, say a T for a center-lined deadlatch or an R for an Adams Rite hookbolt, that plate is ordered on its own.
3) Is the HES 1006 strike fail safe or fail secure, and do I pick that when I order?
Both are offered as separate orderable versions, and the strike itself is field selectable between the two. Fail secure is the standard configuration, and it is the only one carrying the fire rating: the UL 10C 3 hour single door and 1-1/2 hour double door listings apply to fail secure only. The published strength numbers, 2,500 lbs static and 350 ft-lbs dynamic, are also fail secure figures. If the opening is a fire door, order fail secure. Fail safe (unlocked on power loss) is the right choice only where egress or a life-safety sequence requires the strike to release when power drops.
4) Does the HES 1006 electric strike fit a standard ANSI 4-7/8 inch strike prep?
Yes. The faceplate is 4-7/8 inches, so it drops into the standard ANSI 4-7/8 inch strike cutout, and the included hardware covers any brand of cylindrical or mortise lockset that works with that prep. Body depth into the frame is 2-1/16 inches and the strike width is 1-11/16 inches, so confirm your frame has that much clear depth behind the prep before you cut. For wood frames, the 9 x 1-3/8 inch plates (J2, K2, KM-2, N-2, T-2, A-2, H-2) are the wood frame versions.
5) Can I install an HES 1006 electric strike in a wood frame, or is it metal frames only?
Both. Metal and wood frame applications are covered. For wood, use one of the 9 x 1-3/8 inch faceplates, which are the ones specified for wood frame work: J2 for cylindrical locksets up to 3/4 inch throw, K2 and KM-2 for mortise locks by deadlatch position, N-2 for night-latch deadbolt function, T-2 for a normally extended 1 inch deadbolt with a center-lined deadlatch, A-2 for a normally extended 1 inch deadbolt with no deadlatch, and H-2 where the strike should not release with the deadbolt thrown. The longer plate gives you more wood to fasten into.
6) Can I put an electric strike on a fire rated door without voiding the label?
On a fire door you need a strike that is listed for it, and the 1006 is, in fail secure only: UL 10C fire rated for 3 hour single doors and 1-1/2 hour double doors, plus CAN4-S104 (ULC-S104), NFPA-252 and ASTM-E152 fire door conformance. A fail safe strike unlocks when power drops, which is why the fire rating does not extend to it. The same unit is ANSI/BHMA A156.31 Grade 1, UL 294 listed for access control, UL 1034 burglary resistant and suitable for outdoor use, ANSI A250.13-2003 windstorm listed, and Florida Building Code approved.
7) What power supply do I need for an HES 1006 strike, and can I run it on the same 12V supply as my access control panel?
The 1006 runs dual voltage, 12 or 24VDC, continuous duty, drawing .45 amps at 12VDC or .25 amps at 24VDC. Size your supply for that draw plus whatever else is on the circuit. One condition matters: the DC must be well filtered, with ripple under 1 volt RMS. A cheap or unfiltered supply, or an AC transformer feeding it raw, will buzz the solenoid and shorten its life. If you are feeding it from AC, the 2001M plug-in bridge rectifier is the HES accessory for that, and the connection at the strike is a plug-in connector rather than bare leads.
8) My existing strike cutout is a little off from where the lock bolt lands. Can the HES 1006 be adjusted?
There is horizontal adjustment built in. Full keeper shims (part 1006-103) let you move the keeper side to side so the keeper picks up the bolt cleanly instead of forcing you to re-cut the frame. Shims ship with the complete pac. If the old cutout leaves cosmetic damage around the new plate, the 1006-105 trim enhancer (goof plate) covers it, the 1000-104 lip extension trim adapter handles a frame that sits proud, and 1000-130 is a KD filler plate. For exterior openings the 1000-102 rain guard is the accessory to add.
9) Is the HES 1006 strike handed? Do I need to specify left or right hand?
Non-handed, so one part number covers both swings. That is useful if you are stocking spares for a building with doors swinging both ways, or if you are ordering before the opening is confirmed. What you do have to specify is the fail safe or fail secure version and the faceplate that matches your lockset.
10) Is an electric strike strong enough for an exterior entrance, or should I be looking at a maglock?
Strength on the 1006 is 2,500 lbs static and 350 ft-lbs dynamic in fail secure, with a 1,000,000 cycle endurance rating and stainless steel, tamper resistant construction. It is UL 1034 burglary resistant listed and suitable for outdoor use, and windstorm listed to ANSI A250.13-2003. Practical difference against a maglock: a fail secure strike stays locked when power drops and keeps the mechanical lock working as a lock, so the opening is still secure during an outage, and it does not require the door prep and life-safety release wiring a maglock does. For exterior use add the 1000-102 rain guard.
11) Is the HES 1006 rated for a high traffic entrance in an apartment building or school?
Grade 1 under ANSI/BHMA A156.31 with a 1,000,000 cycle endurance rating, stainless steel body, and commercial classification. That is the top grade in the electric strike standard and the cycle count is the number to hold against a main entrance or a school corridor door that gets hit all day. Non-handed construction means one part number standardizes across openings swinging either way, which matters when you are specifying for a whole facility.
12) What finish does the HES 1006 electric strike come in?
630 satin stainless steel, one finish across the line, matching the stainless steel body. 630 is the standard commercial finish, so it lines up with the satin stainless levers, exit devices and push plates already on most commercial openings without a special order.
13) Can I add a door buzzer or connect the HES 1006 to an ElectroLynx harness?
