1) Will the HES 1006CS electric strike work with a mortise lock that has a 1 inch deadbolt?
Yes, and that is the point of the 1006 Series. The 1006CS Smart Strike releases, recaptures and contains mortise locks with a 1 inch deadbolt, which most electric strikes will not do. Which faceplate you pick controls the behavior: A, AD and AM faceplates suit mortise locks with a normally extended 1 inch deadbolt, while the H, HD, HM, HT and HTD faceplates are for 1 inch deadbolt applications where the strike will NOT release while the deadbolt is extended. If you want the deadbolt used only as a night latch, that is the N, ND or NM faceplate.
2) Which HES 1006 faceplate do I order for a Sargent 8200 mortise lock?
Sargent 7800, 8200 and 9200 series locks have the deadlatch below the latchbolt, so the KM faceplate covers the standard case. If the deadbolt is used as a night latch only, order NM; for a normally extended 1 inch deadbolt with the deadlatch below the latchbolt, order AM; and where the strike must stay locked while the deadbolt is thrown, order HM. Sargent 7700 and 8100 locks are a different plate entirely, KD, ND, AD, HD or TD depending on the deadbolt function. All of these are 4-7/8 x 1-1/4 inch ANSI plates.
3) Can the HES 1006CS strike be installed in a wood frame, or is it metal frame only?
Both. The 1006CS is listed for metal and wood frame applications. For wood, HES supplies longer 9 x 1-3/8 inch faceplates instead of the standard 4-7/8 inch plate: J2 for cylindrical locks up to 3/4 inch throw, K2 and KM-2 for mortise locks depending on whether the deadlatch sits above or below the latchbolt, and N-2, T-2, A-2 or H-2 for the 1 inch deadbolt variations. The longer plate spreads the fastening across more wood.
4) Is the HES 1006CS fail safe or fail secure, and can I change it in the field?
Fail secure is the standard configuration, and the fail safe/fail secure mode is field selectable on the 1006CS. That matters for the fire rating: the UL 10C fire ratings, 3 hour on a single door and 1-1/2 hour on a double door, apply to the fail secure setting only. If the opening is a rated door, leave it fail secure. Ordering options run fail secure, fail secure with monitoring, and fail safe.
5) What voltage and current draw does the HES 1006CS electric strike need?
Dual voltage, 12 or 24VDC continuous duty, with no jumper change needed for the strike to accept either. Draw is .45 amps at 12VDC and .25 amps at 24VDC. The DC supply has to be well filtered, ripple under 1 volt RMS, so an unfiltered transformer will not do. If you are feeding it from AC, the 2001M plug-in bridge rectifier is the HES accessory for that, and the 2005M3 SMART Pac III handles power conditioning.
6) Will the HES 1006CS drop into an existing ANSI 4-7/8 inch strike prep?
Yes. The standard 1006CS faceplate is 4-7/8 inches and the pack is built to accommodate any brand of cylindrical or mortise lockset that works with an ANSI 4-7/8 inch strike plate. The strike body is 1-11/16 inches wide and 2-1/16 inches deep, so the frame cavity has to clear that depth behind the prep. Where the old prep leaves visible marks around the new plate, the 1006-105 trim enhancer (goof plate) and the 1000-104 lip extension trim adapter cover it.
7) Is the HES 1006CS strong enough for a main entrance that gets abused?
Static strength is 2,500 lbs and dynamic strength 350 ft-lbs in the fail secure configuration, with an endurance rating of 1,000,000 cycles. It is ANSI/BHMA A156.31 Grade 1 and UL 1034 burglary-resistant listed. Body is stainless steel with an internally mounted solenoid, which is what keeps it tamper resistant. For a high traffic commercial entry that is the top of the strike range.
8) Can an HES 1006 electric strike go on an exterior door exposed to weather?
Yes. It is UL 1034 listed as burglary-resistant and suitable for outdoor use, and it carries ANSI A250.13-2003 windstorm listing plus Florida Building Code approval, which is what a coastal or hurricane-zone spec asks for. For a door that catches driving rain, add the 1000-102 rain guard.
9) Is the HES 1006CS approved for a fire rated door assembly?
Fire rated, and only in the fail secure setting. UL 10C covers a 3 hour single door and a 1-1/2 hour double door, and it is conformant to CAN4-S104 (ULC-S104), NFPA-252 and ASTM-E152 for fire doors. It is also UL 294 listed for access control. Configure it fail safe and the fire listing no longer applies, so on a rated opening the release has to come from the fire alarm interface, not from unlocking the strike on power loss.
10) Does the HES 1006CS need a left hand or right hand version?
No handing to specify. The 1006CS is non-handed, so one part covers left and right hand openings. What you do have to specify is the faceplate for your lockset and the fail safe or fail secure option. The keeper is horizontally adjustable using the full keeper shims that ship in the box, which is how you take up gap variation between the strike and the latch instead of re-prepping the frame.
11) What is the difference between the HES 1006CS Smart Strike and the other 1006 Complete Pacs?
All four 1006 Complete Pacs are one box solutions with the hardware included, but they differ in what they are prepped for. The 1006CS is the Smart Strike, the one built to release, recapture and contain a 1 inch mortise deadbolt. The other Complete Pac configurations in the series are the 1006CDB, the 1006CLB and the 1006CAS. If your opening is a plain cylindrical latch with no deadbolt to manage, you do not need the Smart Strike's deadbolt handling.
12) Which HES 1006 faceplate fits a Schlage mortise lock?
Two plates name Schlage. In a metal frame, the KD faceplate covers Schlage mortise locks with the deadlatch above the latchbolt, and the T faceplate covers mortise locks with a normally extended 1 inch deadbolt and a center-lined deadlatch. In wood frames, Schlage appears on the 9 inch N-2, T-2 and A-2 plates depending on whether the deadbolt is a night latch, sits behind a center-lined deadlatch, or is normally extended with no deadlatch.
13) Can I use an HES 1006 electric strike with an Adams Rite hookbolt on an aluminum storefront lock?
The R faceplate is the hookbolt plate, rated for a hookbolt up to 1 inch throw and listing Adams Rite. Note the strike itself is a 4-7/8 inch ANSI faceplate device with a 2-1/16 inch body depth, so a narrow stile aluminum frame has to have the cavity to take it. For unit and mono locks (Unican, Sargent, Corbin/Russwin) the plate is Z instead.
14) What else do I need to order with an HES 1006CS to finish the install?
The Complete Pac ships with the mounting hardware, full keeper shims and a trim enhancer, so the basic install is covered once you have specified the faceplate and the fail safe or fail secure option. Common adds: HESCUT-MTK metal template kit for cutting the frame, 1000-104 lip extension trim adapter or 1006-109 trim adapter where the old prep does not line up, 1000-130 KD filler plate, 1000-110 replacement strike plate, 2004M ElectroLynx adapter for a quick connect to the door harness, and 2006M plug-in buzzer if the opening needs an audible release. The strike itself uses a plug-in connector rather than flying leads.
15) I need to know if the door gets locked before I release it. Does the HES 1006CS come monitored?
Monitoring is an ordering option. The 1006CS comes as fail secure, fail secure with monitoring, or fail safe. Take the monitored version when the access control panel needs to report strike or latch status back, for example on an entrance where you need to confirm the door secured after a release. If you specify monitored, you are still ordering the fail secure configuration, which is the one the UL 10C fire listing covers.
16) Will an HES 1006 electric strike work with a standard cylindrical lockset, not a mortise lock?
Yes, with the right plate. The J faceplate handles cylindrical locksets up to a 3/4 inch latch throw and all locksets with center-lined bolts, in a metal frame; J2 is the same job in a wood frame on the 9 inch plate. If your cylindrical lock throws more than 3/4 inch, J is not the plate for it. For a straight cylindrical latch with no deadbolt to manage, you are paying for deadbolt capability you will not use.
17) What finish does the HES 1006CS come in, and will it match my other door hardware?
