The HES 1600 Electric Strike is the most advanced electric strike available on the market for cylindrical latchbolt and deadbolt locks. HES 1600-CS 630 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the HES 1600 electric strike work with the cylindrical lock already on my door?
If the lock is built for a 4-7/8 inch strike plate, yes. The HES 1600 accepts every brand of cylindrical or mortise lock designed to work with that plate, and the 1J faceplate in the kit handles cylindrical locksets up to a 3/4 inch latchbolt throw plus all locksets with center-lined bolts. Vertical cavity spacing also takes a deadbolt up to 1 inch, so a lock with both a latchbolt and a deadbolt is covered by the one strike. It is non-handed, so left hand and right hand openings take the same part number.
2) Which HES 1600 faceplate do I use with a Sargent 8200 mortise lock?
The 1KM. Faceplate choice on the 1600 comes down to where the deadlatch sits relative to the latchbolt. Deadlatch below the latchbolt takes the 1KM, which covers Accurate, Arrow, Best (45H and 47H below, 34H to 37H above), Corbin/Russwin, Falcon 1992 M Series, Sargent 7800, 8200 and 9200, and Yale 8800. Deadlatch above the latchbolt takes the 1KD for Jackson, Sargent 7700 and 8100, Schlage and Yale 8700, or the 1K for Baldwin, Marks and PDQ. A cylindrical lock takes the 1J. All four latchbolt plates come in the CS Pac, so the decision is made at the door, not on the order.
3) Is the HES 1600 fail safe or fail secure, and which one can I use on a fire rated door?
Field selectable, so it is set at install and not decided on the order. On a fire rated opening it must be configured fail secure: the UL 10C rating, 3 hours on a single door and 1-1/2 hours on a pair, applies to fail secure only. Fail safe unlocks the keeper when power drops, which is what some egress and stairwell designs call for, but a fire door cannot be left on that setting. The 1600 is also CAN4-S104 (ULC-S104), NFPA-252 and ASTM-E152 fire door conformant and California Fire Marshal listed.
4) What power supply does the HES 1600 electric strike need?
Dual voltage, 12 or 24 VDC or VAC, so one strike suits either panel output. Current draw is .24 amps at 12 volts and .12 amps at 24 volts, which is what you size the supply and the wire run against. Run it on DC for continuous duty; on AC it is intermittent duty only, so any door held unlocked for long stretches has to be on DC. It is PoE friendly for access control panels powering the strike over Ethernet, and ElectroLynx connectors are standard, so it plugs into an ElectroLynx door harness instead of needing field splices.
5) Will the HES 1600 release on a door that is under pressure from weatherstripping or building stack effect?
No, and this is the case to catch before ordering. The 1600 is not preload capable, so a latchbolt being pushed sideways into the keeper by a compressed gasket, a positive pressure stairwell, or a door that has dropped out of square can stop the strike from releasing. For that opening, specify an electric strike listed as preload capable and sort out the door and frame alignment first. Where preload is not in play, the 1600 is a Grade 1 strike rated at 1500 lbs static holding force, 70 ft-lbs dynamic strength and 1,000,000 cycles.
6) How much depth do I need in the frame to fit the HES 1600, and is there a template for the cutout?
Cavity depth is 1-5/8 inches, and the plate covers 4-7/8 x 1-1/4 inches of frame face on the metal frame kits. A field adjustable integrated shim is built into the strike, so keeper position is tuned to the door after mounting rather than by stacking shims behind the plate. HES-MTK, a metal template kit, is available for laying out the prep, and 157 Torx screws are offered where tamper resistance matters. If the lip has to reach further to meet the door, the 1600-104 lip extension trim adapter is ordered in a finish to match.
7) How do I order an HES 1600CS with monitoring for the access control system?
Monitoring is picked as part of the model. 1600CS-LM adds a single lock monitor, 1600CS-DLM adds dual lock monitors, 1600CS-LMS adds a lock monitor plus a strike monitor, and 1600CS-DLMS adds dual lock monitors plus a strike monitor. The lock monitor reports the latchbolt, the strike monitor reports the keeper, so LMS or DLMS is what the head end needs when it has to confirm both that the door latched and that the strike relocked. HES also lists OPT-1LM and OPT-1DLM lock monitors separately for a strike already installed. The strike is UL 294 listed for access control use.
8) Can the HES 1600 electric strike go on an exterior door or in a coastal wind zone?
Exterior use is covered. The 1600 is outdoor rated and UL 1034 burglary resistant listed, with a stainless steel body. For coastal and high wind work it is ANSI/SDI 250.13 windstorm resistant, tested to ANSI-ASTM E330, and Florida Building Code approved under TAS 201, 202 and 203. One caution on a perimeter door: it is not preload capable, so heavy weatherstripping or a door pulled out of alignment by wind pressure needs a preload capable strike instead.
9) Does the HES 1600 meet ANSI/BHMA A156.31 Grade 1 for our facility hardware standard?
Grade 1 under ANSI/BHMA A156.31. Endurance is 1,000,000 cycles, static strength 1500 lbs and dynamic strength 70 ft-lbs, which is the set of numbers a spec section usually asks for on an electric strike. Faceplates carry their own ANSI/BHMA numbers: E09321, E09322 and E09323 on the latchbolt plates, and E09391, E09392, E09393 plus E09331, E09332 and E09333 on the deadbolt plates. It is also UL 294 listed and RoHS compliant, and the body is stainless steel with tamper resistant construction.
10) Will an HES 1600 strike match the finish of the levers and hinges on the rest of my openings?
The faceplate, keeper, case and trim are all finished, so the whole visible assembly matches rather than just the cover plate. The 1600CS is ordered in 630 satin stainless, 629 bright stainless, 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 612 satin bronze, 613E dark oxidized satin bronze or BSP black suede. The 613E and BSP finishes are powder coat rather than plated, worth knowing if you are matching a plated lever. Accessory trim like the 1600-104 lip extension adapter and the 1600-106 adapter and trim enhancer kit is ordered in a finish to match.
11) If an HES 1600 strike fails a few years in, does the whole unit have to come out of the frame?
Components are field replaceable, so the common wear items are swapped in place. HES lists MOD-1SOL as a solenoid replacement module and OPT-1SRK as a spring replacement kit. Faceplates and accessories are interchangeable across the 1600 platform as well, which means a lock change later calls for a different plate rather than a new strike and a new frame prep. For a building standard that is the argument for stocking one strike body plus the plates for whichever locks are on the doors.
