HES 1006CDB 630 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the HES 1006CDB electric strike work with my existing deadbolt lockset?
The 1006CDB accepts both mortise and cylindrical locksets that use an ANSI 4-7/8 inch strike plate, and it takes a deadbolt up to 1 inch. That covers most commercial deadbolt and night-latch setups. What it will not do is release a latchbolt for you, it is built around deadbolt function only, so if you need the latch released electrically you are looking at the wrong strike in the 1006 family.
2) How much space do I need in the frame for a HES 1006 electric strike?
Plan on a 1-11/16 inch deep pocket and 2-1/16 inch of width for the 1006 strike body, with a 4-7/8 inch faceplate on the face of the frame. The solenoid is mounted internally, so there is nothing hanging off the back of the body to find room for. It installs in metal or wood frames.
3) Which faceplate do I use with a Sargent or Best mortise lock on the HES 1006CDB?
Both faceplates ship in the box, so the choice is made at install, not at order time. Use the ND (4-7/8 x 1-1/4 inch) with Sargent 7700 and 8100 series and Yale 8700 mortise locks where the deadbolt runs night-latch only. Use the NM (same 4-7/8 x 1-1/4 inch size) where the lock has a deadlatch sitting below the latchbolt, which covers Best 45H and 47H and 34H-37H, Corbin/Russwin, Falcon, and Sargent 7800, 8200 and 9200 series.
4) Should I order the HES 1006CDB fail-safe or fail-secure?
Fail-secure is the standard build and it is the one to order for perimeter and exterior openings, the door stays locked when the power drops and the key still works. Fail-safe unlocks on power loss, which is what a stairwell or an egress opening on a fire alarm release usually calls for. One thing decides it for a lot of jobs: the UL 10C fire ratings on the 1006 apply to the fail-secure version only, so a fire-rated opening takes fail-secure.
5) Is the HES 1006 electric strike approved for a fire-rated door?
Yes, in the fail-secure configuration. The 1006 is UL 10C fire rated for 3 hours on a single door and 1-1/2 hours on a double door, and it conforms to CAN4-S104 (ULC-S104), NFPA-252 and ASTM-E152 for fire doors. It also carries ANSI A250.13-2003 windstorm listing and Florida Building Code approval, which is what gets asked for on coastal and hurricane-zone work.
6) What voltage and current does the HES 1006CDB electric strike draw?
It runs on 12 or 24VDC continuous duty with no jumper swap needed, drawing .45 amps at 12VDC and .25 amps at 24VDC. Size the supply accordingly if you are running several strikes off one board. The DC needs to be well filtered, ripple under 1 volt RMS, and there is a plug-in connector on the strike rather than flying leads to splice.
7) Is the HES 1006 strong enough for an exterior or high-abuse commercial door?
Holding force is 2,500 lbs static and 350 ft-lbs dynamic in fail-secure, with the body factory tested past 1,000,000 cycles. Construction is stainless steel and the keeper uses a dual interlocking plunger design. It is ANSI/BHMA A156.31 Grade 1 and UL 1034 burglary-resistant listed and suitable for outdoor use, so it is rated for exterior openings, not just interior traffic.
8) Do I need to specify handing when ordering a HES 1006 electric strike?
No. The 1006 is non-handed, so one part number covers left and right hand openings. For a property manager standardizing across a building that means a single strike to stock instead of two, and no wrong-hand returns.
9) What comes in the box with the HES 1006CDB Complete Pac?
One 1006 strike body, both faceplates (ND and NM), and the mounting hardware for the install. Full keeper shims for horizontal adjustment and the trim enhancer are standard features of the strike, which is what lets you take up the gap when the old prep does not line up perfectly. You do not order faceplates separately with the CDB pac.
10) What accessories do I need for a HES 1006 strike in an exterior door or over an ugly old cutout?
For weather exposure there is the 1000-102 rain guard. When the new faceplate does not fully cover the old prep, the 1006-105 trim enhancer (black goof plate) or the 1000-130 KD filler plate handles it, and the 1000-104 lip extension trim adapter or 1006-109 trim adapter deal with frame trim in the way. The 1006-103 gives you additional full keeper shims, 1000-110 is a replacement strike plate, and HESCUT-MTK is the metal frame template kit for laying out the cutout. On the electrical side, 2001M plug-in bridge rectifier for AC input, 2005M3 SMART Pac III, 2004M ElectroLynx adapter, and 2006M plug-in buzzer.
11) What is the difference between the HES 1006CDB and the other 1006 Complete Pacs?
The CDB is the deadbolt version, built for locksets where a deadbolt up to 1 inch is what the strike has to hold. The 1006 series also comes as the 1006CLB Complete Pac, the 1006CS Smart Strike, and the 1006CAS Complete Pac. If the opening uses a latchbolt rather than a deadbolt, the CDB is not the pac you want, the difference between them is the keeper and faceplate set matched to what the lock throws.
12) Is the HES 1006 listed for use on an access control system?
Yes, it is UL 294 listed, which is the access control system units standard specifiers ask for on card reader and credential-based openings. It also carries ANSI/BHMA A156.31 Grade 1. For integration there is the 2004M ElectroLynx adapter and the 2005M3 SMART Pac III on the accessory list.
13) What finish does the HES 1006CDB electric strike come in?
630 satin stainless steel, which is the standard commercial finish and matches most Grade 1 mortise and cylindrical trim already hanging in a commercial building. The strike body itself is stainless steel construction, not plated steel, so an exterior opening is not going to rust the faceplate out.
