HES 1600 630 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Does the HES 1600 electric strike work with my existing mortise lock, or do I need a specific brand?
The 1600 Series strike body fits every brand of cylindrical or mortise lock designed to work with a 4-7/8 inch strike plate. What changes brand to brand is the faceplate you pair with it, not the body. The 1N faceplate covers Accurate, Arrow, Baldwin, Marks, Omnia and PDQ mortise locksets; the 1ND covers Sargent 7700 and 8100 and Yale 8700; the 1NM covers Best 45H/47H and 34H-37H, Corbin/Russwin, Falcon, and Sargent 7800, 8200 and 9200. Buy the body once, then match the faceplate to the lock in the door.
2) Will the HES 1600 accept a 1 inch deadbolt as well as the latchbolt?
Yes, up to a 1 inch deadbolt, and that is the reason to choose it over a latchbolt-only strike. The cavity is spaced vertically to take both the latchbolt and the deadbolt of the same lock, so a classroom or entry mortise lock with a night-latch deadbolt works off one strike. If the lock throws a normally extended 1 inch deadbolt with no deadlatch, use the 1NTD faceplate.
3) How deep does the frame cutout need to be for a HES 1600 electric strike?
The strike body is 1-5/8 inches deep and 1-3/4 inches wide, behind a 4-7/8 inch faceplate. That depth is what to check against your frame before you commit, particularly on an aluminum or shallow hollow metal jamb. It goes into metal or wood frames, and a field-adjustable integrated shim takes up the gap so you are not making up spacers on site.
4) Can the HES 1600 be set fail safe or does it have to be ordered that way?
Fail safe and fail secure are field selectable on the strike, so one part number covers both and you decide at install. One caution on fire doors: the UL 10C fire rating, 3 hours on a single door, applies in fail secure only. On a fire-rated opening, set it fail secure and release the door another way.
5) Is one 12 volt and 24 volt strike enough, or do I need to order voltage-specific parts for a mixed building?
One part covers both. The 1600 is auto-sensing 12/24 VDC dual voltage, drawing 0.24 amps at 12 volts and 0.12 amps at 24 volts, continuous duty on DC. It is PoE friendly, which matters when the strike is running off an access control panel or a PoE door controller rather than a dedicated supply. Note AC is intermittent duty only, so do not hold it energized on an AC transformer.
6) My door is under pressure from a closer or a stack effect. Will the HES 1600 still release?
No, not against latch preload. The 1600 is not a preload capable strike, so if the door is pushed against the keeper by wind pressure, a stair pressurization fan, or a hard-set closer, it may bind rather than release. Fix the opening first, adjust the closer, correct the frame alignment, or use the field-adjustable shim to set the gap. If the opening genuinely holds load on the latch, specify a strike rated for preload instead.
7) Is the HES 1600 strong enough for an exterior perimeter door on a commercial building?
It is built for that use. Stainless steel construction, 1,500 lbs static strength and 70 ft-lbs dynamic, ANSI/BHMA A156.31 Grade 1, and UL 1034 burglary-resistant listed and suitable for outdoor use. It is also windstorm rated to ANSI/SDI 250.13 with ANSI-ASTM E330 and Florida Building Code approval under TAS 201, 202 and 203, which is what a coastal or hurricane-zone spec asks for.
8) Which HES 1600 monitor option should I specify, LM, DLM, LMS or DLMS?
Monitoring is ordered with the strike, not added later as a plug-in, so decide before the PO. LM gives a single lock monitor telling the panel the latch is secure in the keeper. DLM doubles that up for redundancy or for a second contact to another system. LMS adds a strike monitor on top of the lock monitor, reporting keeper position so you can tell an unlocked strike from an open latch. DLMS gives dual lock monitors plus the strike monitor, which is the full set for an audited or alarmed opening. There is also a no-monitor version if the door is just being released. All four options, plus no monitor, come in every one of the seven finishes.
9) Do I have to order a handed version of the HES 1600 for left and right doors?
No handing to specify. The 1600 is non-handed, so the same part goes into a left-hand or right-hand opening. For a property manager standardizing across a building, that means one line item covers every door instead of splitting the order by swing.
10) Can I match the HES 1600 strike to the lever and hinges already on my doors?
Seven fully finished options: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 612 satin bronze, 613E dark oxidized satin bronze in powder coat, 629 bright stainless, 630 satin stainless, and BSP black suede powder. The faceplate, keeper, case and trim are all finished, not just the visible plate, so the inside of the cavity does not read as bare metal when the door stands open. Lip extension trim adapters, part 1600-104, are available in matching finishes.
11) Is the HES 1600 approved for a fire-rated door assembly?
Fire rated, and the listings are specific about the configuration. UL 10C at 3 hours on a single door, fail secure only, and UL 10C at 1-1/2 hours on a double door. It is also conformant to NFPA-252, ASTM-E152 and CAN4-S104 (ULC-S104), listed by the California Fire Marshal, and UL 294 listed for access control use. For a hospital, school or government spec, those are the lines the reviewer is looking for.
12) Should I use a 4-7/8 inch electric strike like the HES 1600 or a narrow strike for my opening?
The 4-7/8 inch faceplate strike is the one for a hollow metal or wood frame with a standard ANSI strike prep, which is what most commercial swinging doors have. It suits a cylindrical or mortise lock and takes both latchbolt and deadbolt. It is the wrong choice for a narrow aluminum stile storefront door, where the jamb is too shallow for a 1-5/8 inch deep body and the prep is a narrow rim or cutout instead. Check the frame depth first, then the existing strike prep.
13) How long will a HES 1600 electric strike last on a high traffic entrance?
Rated at 1,000,000 cycles, which on a main entrance running a few hundred releases a day is years of service rather than months. It is also serviceable in place: the spring replacement kit is OPT-1SRK and the solenoid comes out as a module, MOD-1SOL, so a worn strike gets repaired in the frame instead of pulled and replaced. Lock monitors are field-addable as OPT-1LM or OPT-1DLM.
14) Will the HES 1600 wire into my existing access control panel without a special harness?
It ships with ElectroLynx connectors, the plug-in harness standard used across Allegion door hardware, so a wired door with ElectroLynx transfer hinges or a power transfer connects without field splicing. On a straight two-wire release it is simply 12 or 24 VDC to the strike, and the auto-sensing circuit handles either. Monitor contacts are separate conductors and only present if you ordered LM, DLM, LMS or DLMS.
