HES 7 501 630 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the HES 7501 electric strike work on a fire-rated door?
Yes, the 7501 is UL 10C fire rated to 3 hours, but only in the fail secure setting. It is also ULC-S104, NFPA-252 and ASTM-E152 fire door conformant. If the opening is fire rated, set the strike fail secure and use a fire exit device with a fire-rated latchbolt. Wiring it fail safe on a fire door breaks the listing.
2) My exit door binds from weatherstripping and the strike won't release. Does the HES 7501 handle preload?
That is the case the 7501 is built for. It accommodates pre-load in the fail secure setting, so a warped or misaligned door, weather stripping or a smoke seal pressing the latch against the keeper won't stop it from releasing. Note the preload capability is fail secure only, so if the opening needs to unlock on power loss, preload is not covered.
3) Can I use the HES 7501 with a rim exit device, or is it only for cylindrical locks?
The 7501 takes latchbolts up to a 3/4 inch throw, which covers cylindrical locksets and rim exit device latches. Interlocking or starwheel latchbolts are a different animal and need a strike built for them, such as the Adams Rite 7800. Deadbolts are out; this is a latchbolt strike.
4) What size frame cutout does the HES 7501 need?
The 7501 faceplate is 4-7/8 x 1-1/4 x 1-11/16 inches, and the strike body depth is 1-11/16 inches. That depth is the number that decides the job. Measure the frame cavity behind the strike location before you cut. HES publishes the HESCUT-MTK metal template kit for laying out the prep. It fits both metal and wood frames, and hollow metal is the typical application.
5) Do I have to order the HES 7501 handed for a left or right hand door?
No handing to specify. The 7501 is non-handed, so one part number covers left and right hand openings, which is why it stocks well for a property manager keeping spares across a building. Pick finish and whether you want the latchbolt monitor, and that is the whole order.
6) Is the HES 7501 fail safe or fail secure, and can I change it in the field?
Both, and you set it on site. 8) What is the closest equivalent to the HES 7501 electric strike from another manufacturer for a fire-rated rim exit device opening?

Because it mounts to the face of the frame it does not need the mortise prep the HES 7501 requires, which has a strike body depth of 1-11/16 inches and a 4-7/8 inch faceplate. On aluminum or hollow metal frames that are already in service and cannot be cut, the 6300 is the substitute; where the frame can take the cut, the 7501 sits flush in the prep.
10) Can the Adams Rite 74R1 or 74R2 be used in place of the HES 7501 on a fire door?
No. The Adams Rite 74R1 and 74R2 Ultraline strikes are built for rim exit devices with field-selectable fail-safe/fail-secure operation, which reads like a match, but neither carries a fire rating. The HES 7501 is fire rated. On a labeled fire door the 7501 or another fire rated strike is the part that holds the label; the 74R1 and 74R2 belong on non-labeled openings where the same rim device and selectable operation are wanted.
11) Should I order the LBM version of the HES 7501?
Order the LBM if your access control panel needs to know the door is latched. The latchbolt monitor gives a dry contact reporting latchbolt position, which is what feeds a door-forced or door-held alarm.
