HES 310-4 630 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) My rim exit device has a 1/2 inch throw latchbolt, not 3/4 inch. Will the 310-4 faceplate still work?
Yes, and you do not order a different plate for it. The 310-4 faceplate is 3/4 inch thick with a 1/4 inch base shim built in. Pop the shim off in the field and the faceplate drops to 1/2 inch, which is what a 1/2 inch throw rim device needs. One plate covers both throws, so you set the thickness at the opening rather than guessing at the order form.
2) Is the 310-4 electric strike strong enough for a high abuse door like a school or a housing entry?
It is built for exactly that. The 310-4 is all stainless steel, rated 1,500 lbs static strength and 70 ft-lbs dynamic, with a 1 million cycle endurance rating and ANSI/BHMA A156.31 Grade 1. Tamper resistant construction plus set screws for horizontal lockdown means it holds its position under abuse instead of walking in the frame. It is a commercial, indoor rated device, so it is not for an exterior exposed opening.
3) Will the HES 310-4 work on a door with pressure on the latch, like a stack pressure or a warped door?
No. The 310-4 is not preload capable, so if the latchbolt is under side load from a positive pressure stairwell, a closer pulling the door tight, or a door out of plumb, the strike may not release cleanly. On openings with known preload you need a preload rated strike instead. Solve the pressure at the door first if you want to keep the 310-4 on that frame.
4) What is the difference between the 310-4 and 310-4S faceplate for a rim exit device?
The keeper. The 310-4 faceplate carries the PK keeper and suits Pullman style latchbolts up to 3/4 inch on single doors. The 310-4S carries the SK keeper and is the one for Squarebolt style rim devices such as Corbin Russwin ED4200S, ED5200S and ED5200SA Securebolt, and Yale 7150(F), 7250 and 7270M(F). Identify the latchbolt shape on the exit device before ordering - a square bolt landing on a PK keeper will not deadlatch correctly. Both come in 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 629 bright stainless and 630 satin stainless.
5) For a 3-hour fire rated opening, does it matter which faceplate I put on the strike?
Yes - stay in the series. The Folger Adam 310-4 is UL 10C 3-hour fire rated in fail secure, UL 1034 burglary resistant listed, UL 294 listed, and conformant to NFPA-252 and CAN4-S104, and those listings are for the strike as assembled with its own 310 Series faceplate. The RCI B4704-32D and RCI B6-04-32D are faceplates for the RCI 4/7 Series and 6 Series respectively and belong on those bodies. On a labeled door, order the 310-4 or 310-4S plate in the finish you need and leave the strike fail secure.
6) Will an RCI B4704 faceplate work as a replacement on a Folger Adam 310-4 electric strike?
No. The RCI B4704-32D faceplate is built for the RCI 4 and 7 Series strikes, and the RCI B6-04-32D is built for the RCI 6 Series, so neither is cut for a 310-4 body. The 310-4 faceplate is a 310 Series part with its own keeper arrangement - PK keeper on the 310-4 and SK keeper on the 310-4S - and a 3/4 inch face with an integrated 1/4 inch base shim that comes out in the field to drop the face to 1/2 inch. Order the 310-4 faceplate by keeper type and finish to stay with the strike body you already have in the frame.
7) My frame prep is 1-1/4 by 4-7/8 with round corners - can I use the 310-4 faceplate there?
That prep matches the RCI style faceplates - the RCI B4704-32D for the 4 and 7 Series and the RCI B6-04-32D for the 6 Series are both 1-1/4 by 4-7/8 inch with round corners. The Folger Adam 310-4 faceplate is a wider plate built for the 310 Series body and is not a drop-in for a narrow ANSI cutout. If the existing prep is the 1-1/4 by 4-7/8 round corner opening, specify the RCI plate that matches the strike series already installed.
8) What voltage and current does the HES Folger Adam 310-4 draw?
12 or 24 VDC, continuous duty, drawing 510 mA at 12 VDC or 250 mA at 24 VDC. Size the power supply off the 12 volt figure if you are running a bank of these on one supply, since that is where the load stacks up fastest. If your access control board puts out AC rather than DC, the 2001M plug-in bridge rectifier handles the conversion at the strike.
9) Does the HES 310-4 have to be handed left or right when I order it?
No handing to specify. The 310 Series is non-handed, so the same part works on a left hand or right hand opening, and it has in-frame horizontal adjustability plus set screws to lock it down once you have the keeper aligned to the latch. For a property manager standardizing across a building, that means one part number covers every door swing.
10) Can I surface mount an HES 310-4 strike if my frame cannot be cut?
