Note: Double-door models are available with 4 different center-to center dimensions between latchbolt keepers. Keepers are wide enough to compensate for vertical-rod exit bolts which may be as much as 3/8" off center-to-center dimension, either way.

When using an electric strike in conjunction with a vertical-rod device, it is necessary that:

  • The bottom rod of the exit device be removed or made inoperative
  • The latchbolt of the exit device be the "Pullman" or beveled type
  • The latchbolt be free-latching and remain projected while the door is open. Mechanisms that hold the latchbolt retracted while the door is open, and automatically release it when the door is closed, must be removed or made inoperative

HES 310-4-1 630 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) How do I pick between the 310-4-1, 310-4-2, 310-4-3 and 310-4-30 faceplates?
You pick by the center-to-center spacing of the vertical rods on your pair of doors, measured at the head. The 310-4-30 covers 2-5/8 to 3-3/8 inches, the 310-4-1 covers 4 to 4-3/4 inches, the 310-4-2 covers 4-5/8 to 5-3/8 inches, and the 310-4-3 covers 5-1/4 to 6 inches. All four come with the PK keeper as standard. Measure the actual rod spacing on the installed devices before you order, since two of the ranges overlap and the wrong plate will not line up on either leaf.
2) My rod spacing measurement is a little off from the listed range. Is there any tolerance on the 310-4 keepers?
There is some. The keepers on the 310-4 double-door plates are made wide enough to take vertical-rod exit bolts sitting as much as 3/8 inch off the nominal center-to-center dimension, either direction. Beyond that you are into the next plate size. The keeper is also adjustable to take up door and frame misalignment, which is a separate allowance from the rod spacing itself.
3) What has to be done to my vertical rod exit device before a Folger Adam 310-4 strike will work with it?
Three things. The bottom rod has to be removed or made inoperative, so the leaf latches only at the head into the strike. The exit device latchbolt has to be the Pullman or beveled type, since that is what the keeper is built to catch. And the latchbolt has to be free-latching and stay projected while the door stands open; if the device has a mechanism that holds the bolt retracted with the door open and drops it when the door closes, that mechanism must be removed or disabled. Miss any of the three and the strike will not release or relatch reliably.
4) Does the door stay locked or unlock if power is lost on a 310-4 strike?
Fail secure is the standard build, so on a power loss the keeper stays locked and the opening is still secured from the outside; exiting through the rim device is unaffected. Fail safe is offered as an option if your life safety or access control scheme needs the strike to release when power drops. Decide that before ordering, because it is an ordered configuration, not a field switch on this series.
5) Can I put a Folger Adam 310-4 strike on a fire rated pair of doors?
No. The 310-4 is not fire rated, and it also requires the bottom rod of the exit device to be removed or made inoperative, which is not permitted on a fire door assembly. For a labeled opening you need a fire rated electric strike and a fire exit device with its rods intact. The 310-4 is for non-rated high abuse openings.
6) Is the 310-4 strong enough for a high traffic or high abuse entrance?
That is the application it is built for. Static strength is 1,500 lbs, dynamic strength is 70 ft-lbs, and endurance is rated at 1 million cycles. Construction is all stainless steel throughout, which is where the corrosion resistance and the tamper resistance come from. It carries ANSI/BHMA A156.31 Grade 1, is UL 1034 burglary resistant listed and UL 294 listed, and is RoHS compliant.
7) Will a 310-4 strike release if the doors are under pressure from a closer or stack pressure?
Do not count on it. The 310-4 is not preload capable, so if the latchbolt is being pushed hard into the keeper by door closer force, wind load or building stack pressure, the keeper may not release on command. On openings that see consistent preload you want a strike specifically rated as preload capable, or you need to correct the closer adjustment and door alignment first.
8) Can an RCI B4704 faceplate be used to replace a Folger Adam 310-4-X faceplate?
No. The RCI B4704-32D is a 1-1/4 inch by 4-7/8 inch round corner faceplate made for RCI 4 and 7 Series strikes, a narrow single-door cutout. The Folger Adam 310-4-X faceplates are part of the 310 Series vertical surface mounted line for pairs of doors, where the plate carries two Pullman keepers spaced to match the vertical rod centers. The two are not interchangeable prep, so order the 310-4-X plate that matches the rod spacing on the opening.
9) Does the 310-4 electric strike need to be handed for a left or right hand door?
No handing to specify. The 310-4 vertical surface mounted strike is non-handed, and each plate serves both leaves of the pair, so you order by rod spacing and finish only.
10) What voltage and current does the Folger Adam 310-4 strike draw?

11) Can I mount a 310-4 strike outside on an exterior gate or an unprotected entrance?

The all stainless construction gives corrosion resistance, but that is not the same as an outdoor listing. For a weather-exposed opening, look for a strike specifically rated for outdoor use.
12) Can I add latch monitoring to a Folger Adam 310-4 strike for my access control system?

That lets the access control head end see both that the door has latched and that the cam has locked, rather than just that the strike was energized. It is an ordered option on the strike, so specify it up front.

15) Can I use a 310-4 strike on a single door with a rim exit device?
The 310-4 vertical surface mounted series is made for heavy duty use on single or double doors, and it accepts rim exit devices with a swinging Pullman style latchbolt. The four faceplate variations, though, are the double-door versions defined by vertical rod center-to-center spacing, so if your opening is a single leaf with a rim device, you are ordering by the strike configuration rather than by rod spacing.
16) What is the difference between the RCI 6 Series faceplate and the Folger Adam 310-4-X faceplate?

17) I need a faceplate in a finish other than satin stainless -- what are my options?

The RCI B4704 and B6-04 faceplates are cataloged in 32D satin stainless. If the opening has to match brass or bronze trim, the 310-4-X is the one that offers it.
18) What finishes does the 310-4 faceplate come in, and do they match my other door hardware?
