Larsens Architectural Series 2409- 5LB Capacity - Fire Rated - Steel Door

These Architectural Series Cabinets feature a nominal inside box dimension of 24 inches (60.9 cm) height, 9.5 inches (24.1 cm) width and 5 inches (12.7 cm) depth.

BOX SPECIFICATION: All recessed and semi-recessed cabinets and surface-mounted steel cabinets have a heavy gauge, white baked enamel box. Surface-mounted cabinets with aluminum door and trim have a box constructed entirely of clear or color anodized aluminum. Surface-mounted cabinets with stainless steel door and trim have a box constructed entirely of 304 stainless steel with #4 finish.

TRIM AND DOOR SPECIFICATION: Steel trims and doors are one piece, constructed of cold-rolled steel with a standard finish of white baked acrylic enamel, which can be used as either a finish or prime coat. Aluminum trims are constructed of extruded or fabricated aluminum and all corners are mitered. Aluminum is the recommended material for applications in salt air and other corrosion prone environments. Clear satin anodized finish is standard for all trims and doors, and optional color anodized finishes are available. To specify aluminum trim and door, use the prefix “AL” before the cabinet model number. Stainless steel trims and doors are one piece, constructed of #4 finish, 304 stainless steel. To specify stainless steel trim and door, use the prefix “SS” before the cabinet model number. All steel and stainless steel doors have a tubular, hollow-metal design. Samples of door and trim materials are pictured.

ALL OF THESE DOOR STYLES ARE AVAILABLE WITH EXCLUSIVE LARSEN-LOC® OPTION. The Larsen-Loc® provides access to a locked cabinet, without requiring the breaking of glass. During an emergency, it permits the cabinet door to be opened simply by pulling sharply on the handle. Factory applied decal reads: “IN CASE OF FIRE ONLY – PULL FIRMLY ON HANDLE”. By specifying the Larsen-Loc®, access to a locked cabinet is totally independent of the desired door style and glazing. All door styles can be combined with the Larsen-Loc®, including a solid metal door. The standard Larsen-Loc® on a Solid Door would be appropriate for gymnasiums or any locations where emergency access is required but where any kind of glazing or glazing opening may not be suitable. The Solid Door with Larsen-Loc® also can be specified as an Institutional Door (emergency access only with a key) by deleting the pull handle and decal

  • Inside box depth is 43 ⁄4" when supplied with aluminum door and trim. The AL2409-5R and AL2409-R7 have 11 ⁄4" square trims.
  • Trimless cabinets must be installed before drywall because their plaster stops must be behind the drywall. Trimless are not recommended for block wall installation.
  • Deduct 3 ⁄4" from H x W dimensions for cabinets with aluminum door and trim. This does not apply to “FS” fire-rated option.
  • To comply with ADA wall projection guidelines, this cabinet must be mounted with its leading edge at or below 27" from the finished floor

Die-cut letters are state-of-the-art for precise and attractive cabinet identification and have replaced silk screen letters as the industry standard. They are available in standard colors of red, black, or white and the standard designs of vertical, horizontal, or type A. A selection of the more popular styles is pictured below. Custom lettering, special colors, and pictorial graphics also are available, if specified.

VIGILANTE ALARM

Larsen’s exclusive Vigilante Alarm provides additional protection for a cabinet’s life safety contents. The Vigilante can reduce theft losses, help to prolong extinguisher life, and safeguard fire department valves, fire hose, and other equipment. It is constructed of high impact plastic, is plunger activated and includes a heavy-duty 9 volt battery as standard equipment. The on/off jack provides for convenient servicing of the cabinet’s contents by authorized personnel.

Larsens FS24095RFG – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can you lock a Larsens extinguisher cabinet and still get the extinguisher out in a fire?
Yes. The lock is an order option on the 2409, and the Larsen-Loc handles the conflict between security and access: the door opens by pulling firmly on the handle even when locked, with a factory decal reading IN CASE OF FIRE ONLY - PULL FIRMLY ON HANDLE. No glass to break. It works with any of the door styles, including the solid metal door.
2) What rough opening do I need to frame for a Larsens 2409 recessed extinguisher cabinet?
Frame a rough opening of 26-1/8 inches high by 11-5/8 inches wide for the 2409. The trim flange covers 27-1/2 by 13 inches, so you have roughly 11/16 of an inch of flange coverage on each side of the opening to hide framing and drywall edges.
3) How do I pick the wall depth on a Larsens 2409 cabinet?
Wall depth is ordered to match your wall cavity, and the 2409 comes in 3.75, 4.875 and 6.125 inch depths. The inside box is 5 inches deep regardless, so the depth you choose controls how much of the box sits inside the wall and how far it projects into the room. A 3.75 inch stud wall takes the 3.75 option and leaves the cabinet semi-recessed; a deeper cavity lets the box sit fully in the wall.
4) What mounting height keeps a recessed fire extinguisher cabinet ADA compliant?
To meet ADA wall projection guidance, the 2409 has to be mounted with its leading edge at or below 27 inches from the finished floor. Above that height a projecting cabinet becomes a protruding object in the circulation path. The cabinet itself is built to the ADA configuration, but the compliance is only real if the installer sets that 27 inch dimension.
5) Which door style should I order for a gym or a school corridor?
Door style on the 2409 is a choice of Full Glass, Horizontal Duo, Vertical Duo, Solid, or Institutional. For gymnasiums and other high impact areas, the Solid door with the Larsen-Loc option is the one Larsens points to: it gives emergency access by pulling sharply on the handle with no glazing to break. The Institutional door is the same solid panel set up for key-only emergency access, with the pull handle and decal deleted, which is what you want where you do not want anyone opening the cabinet casually.
6) Is the Larsens 2409 steel door cabinet fire rated?
Yes, the 2409 with steel door is the fire rated build. That matters where the cabinet is recessed into a rated wall assembly, since cutting a non-rated box into a rated partition breaches it.
7) Should I specify a steel, aluminum, or stainless extinguisher cabinet?
The 2409 as built here is cold-rolled steel, one piece door and trim, finished in white baked acrylic enamel that works as a finish coat or as a prime coat for field painting to match the wall. Larsens recommends aluminum instead for salt air and other corrosion prone environments, ordered with an AL prefix on the model number; stainless is a #4 finish 304 stainless door and trim ordered with an SS prefix. Note the fire rated option is tied to the steel build.
8) What glazing options are there on a fire extinguisher cabinet door, and which one do I need?
Standard acrylic is included on the glazed 2409 doors, with tempered glass and laminated safety glass available. Acrylic takes a hit without shattering and is the usual pick for corridors and schools. Tempered is the harder, more scratch resistant face; laminated holds together when broken. If breakable glazing is a problem in the space at all, the Solid door with the Larsen-Loc removes the question entirely.
9) Can a trimless recessed extinguisher cabinet go into a block wall?
No. Trimless cabinets are not recommended for block wall installation, and they have to be set before the drywall goes up because their plaster stops sit behind the drywall. On a block wall or any retrofit into a finished wall, order a trimmed cabinet, where the 27-1/2 by 13 inch flange covers the cut edges.
10) How do I get a fire extinguisher cabinet labeled to match the rest of my building?
Identification on the 2409 is ordered as die-cut letters, in red, black, or white, in vertical, horizontal, or Type A layouts, plus an international extinguisher symbol in red or black. Die-cut has replaced silk screen as the industry standard. Separate wall signs and horizontal or vertical decals are also selectable, and custom lettering, special colors, and pictorial graphics can be specified. If you are standardizing across a portfolio, pick one layout and color and repeat it on every order.
11) Is there a way to stop people walking off with the extinguisher out of the cabinet?
Larsens offers the Vigilante Alarm as an add-on to the 2409, in a standard or surface mounted version. It is plunger activated, high impact plastic, and runs on a heavy-duty 9 volt battery included with it. An on/off jack lets service techs open the cabinet for annual extinguisher inspection without setting it off. Combined with the lock option it cuts theft and keeps the extinguisher in place between inspections.
12) What is the difference between a recessed and non-recessed handle on a Larsens cabinet?
Handle style on the 2409 is ordered as Recessed or Not Recessed. A recessed handle sits within the door face so nothing sticks out into the corridor, which is the choice in tight circulation paths and where the cabinet is mounted along a walking route. The non-recessed pull stands proud of the door and is easier to grab with a gloved hand. Fire handles are separately selectable in standard, red, white, or black.
