Larsens Cameo Series C3216R-20LB Capacity Non-Fire Rated Steel Fire Extinguisher Cabinets

These Cameo Series fire extinguisher cabinets feature a nominal inside box dimension of 32 inches (81.3 cm) height, 16 inches (40.6 cm) width and 3.5 inches (8.9 cm) depth. Along with the 3.5 cabinet depth, the door features a cylindrical bubble to accommodate a 20 lb ABC Fire Extinguisher.
GENERAL DESCRIPTION: Larsen’s Cameo Series provides an attractive as well as a safe and practical method of housing a fire extinguisher. By projecting the extinguisher into its protruding bubble, the Cameo allows for not only installation into a shallow wall but also full, 180° visibility of the cabinet’s contents. The manufacturer’s standard bracket must be used to support the fire extinguisher inside the Cameo cabinet. The standard door and trim material is steel, and optional materials include both aluminum and stainless steel. All door frames are 1 ⁄2" thick, hollow-metal design. All units have a satin finish pull handle with a self-adjusting roller catch, and a continuous piano hinge constructed of material which matches the door and trim.
BOX SPECIFICATION: All recessed and semi-recessed cabinets and surface-mounted steel cabinets have a heavy gauge, white baked enamel box. Surface mounted cabinets with aluminum door and trim have a box constructed entirely of clear or color anodized aluminum. Surfacemounted cabinets with stainless steel door and trim have a box constructed entirely of 304 stainless steel with a #4 finish.
TRIM AND DOOR SPECIFICATION: The Cameo trim and door is identical to the Architectural Series except that the Cameo door is glazed with a vacuum-formed acrylic bubble. With the exception of the bronze and red semi-transparent bubbles, the optional lettering is placed on the back of the bubble to prevent damage. A selection of the more popular Cameo door styles is pictured. The complete range of options, however, is outlined at right. The Larsen-Loc® is available with all door styles.
  • Trimless cabinets must be installed before drywall because their plaster stops must be behind the drywall. Trimless are not recommended for block wall installation.
  • Deduct 3 ⁄4 from H x W dimensions for cabinets with aluminum trim. This does not apply to the “FS” fire-rated option.
  • To comply with ADA wall projection guidelines, this cabinet must be mounted with its leading edge at or below 27" from the finished floor

1) What size rough opening do I need to frame for a Larsens C3216R recessed extinguisher cabinet?
Frame a rough opening of 33 inches high by 17 inches wide by 4 inches deep for the C3216R. The trim flange covers that opening at 35.5 by 19.5 inches, so you get about an inch and a quarter of flange overlap on each side to hide a rough cut. Note the 4 inch rough depth: the cabinet box is only 3.5 inches deep, which is what lets it go into a shallow wall. Anything deeper than a 2x4 stud bay is not required.
2) Can a 20 lb ABC extinguisher fit in a cabinet only 3.5 inches deep?
Yes, and that is the whole point of the Cameo design. The box itself is 32 by 16 by 3.5 inches, which alone would not clear a 20 lb ABC unit. The door carries a vacuum formed acrylic bubble that projects the extinguisher forward out of the wall, so the cylinder sits partly in the bubble rather than in the box. You must use the manufacturer's standard bracket to support the extinguisher inside the cabinet.
3) How high do I mount a Larsens Cameo cabinet to stay ADA compliant?
Mount it with the leading edge at or below 27 inches from the finished floor. That is the ADA wall projection requirement, and it matters more on a Cameo than on a flat door cabinet because the bubble projects out into the corridor. Above 27 inches, a projecting object becomes a cane detection problem. The C3216R is an ADA compliant unit when mounted that way.
4) What is the difference between a Larsens Cameo bubble cabinet and a flat door extinguisher cabinet?
Two things decide it: wall depth and visibility. The Cameo pushes the extinguisher forward into a clear acrylic bubble on the door, so the box only needs 3.5 inches of depth and can go into a shallow wall where a full depth flat cabinet will not fit. It also gives 180 degree visibility of the extinguisher from down the corridor. The tradeoff is that the door projects into the space, which is why the 27 inch mounting limit applies. If you have a normal stud bay and want a flush door that does not stick out, a flat door cabinet is the better call.
5) Can I put a Larsens Cameo C3216R into a block wall?
A recessed Cameo with trim goes into block fine, since the trim flange laps the opening. What you cannot use in block is the trimless version: trimless cabinets have plaster stops that must sit behind the drywall, so they have to be installed before the drywall goes up and are not recommended for block wall installation. The C3216R as configured is a recessed trim cabinet, so order it that way for masonry.
6) How do I stop people walking off with the extinguisher in a Larsens Cameo cabinet?
Two options address it. The Vigilante alarm is available in a standard or surface mounted version and sounds when the cabinet is opened, which is the usual answer in schools, dorms and public corridors. Larsen-Loc is also offered with all Cameo door styles if you want the door locked rather than alarmed. Both are order-time selections on the cabinet.

No, the door style is selected per cabinet, and the full range of Cameo door styles is available with the Larsen-Loc option, so you can standardize on one look across a facility without giving up locking. If some openings in the building have deeper walls, that is fine too, since the Cameo's 3.5 inch box only sets a minimum.
