The dark grey PVC elbow features female socket connections to change the direction of piping 45 degrees. Chemtrol® fittings connect PVC piping lengths together with solvent cementing, threading or flanging to create a highly reliable, leak-free system. Please refer to Chemtrol technical data sheets, chemical resistance guides and catalogs for engineering and installation information. PVC Schedule 80 has the highest long-term hydrostatic strength of any other major thermoplastic material used for piping. Chemtrol® PVC fittings are lightweight, easy to install, maintenance-free, and will not rust, scale, pit or corrode. Chemtrol® premium line of plastic fittings is backed by a 1-year limited warranty. Because Chemtrol® is a NIBCO brand the flow-control fittings are unsurpassed in quality, performance and longevity.

Nibco CA05050 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Does the Nibco 4506 45-degree elbow thread onto pipe, or does it have to be solvent welded?
Solvent weld only. The 4506 is an S x S fitting, meaning both ends are female sockets that the pipe slips into and gets cemented with PVC primer and solvent cement. There are no threads on either end. If you need a threaded connection at that point in the run, you need a different fitting or a threaded adapter cemented into this one.
2) Can I use a Schedule 80 PVC 45-degree elbow on a compressed air line?
No. The Chemtrol PVC fittings are explicitly not to be used or tested with compressed air or other gases. They are for liquid service only, and pressure testing should be done hydrostatically. Using PVC on air is a shatter hazard.
3) What is the temperature limit on the Nibco 4506 Schedule 80 PVC elbow?
Maximum service temperature is 140 degrees F. That rules it out for hot water distribution and steam. Also keep in mind PVC pressure ratings fall off as temperature climbs toward that ceiling, so design accordingly on warm process lines.
4) Is the Nibco 4506 elbow approved for potable water?
It is listed to NSF/ANSI Standard 14 and NSF/ANSI/CAN 61, the drinking water system component standard, and is flagged lead-free. It is used in commercial plumbing, industrial, and irrigation systems.
5) Will a Schedule 80 PVC elbow fit Schedule 40 PVC pipe?
Yes on the socket dimension. Sch 80 and Sch 40 PVC share the same outside diameter at a given nominal size, so the 4506 socket accepts Sch 40 pipe and cements to it normally. What changes is the wall: Sch 80 is thicker, so the system is only rated to the weakest component. If the pipe is Sch 40, the run is limited by the Sch 40 pressure rating, not the fitting's.
6) What pipe sizes does the Nibco 4506 PVC Schedule 80 45-degree elbow come in?
Fourteen sizes, from 1/4 inch up through 12 inch: 1/4, 1/2, 3/4, 1, 1-1/4, 1-1/2, 2, 2-1/2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12 inch. All are straight size, so both sockets match the same nominal pipe size, with no reducing versions in the run.
7) Should I use a 45-degree elbow or a 90 here?
The 4506 makes a 45 degree change of direction, also called a 1/8 bend. Two 45s offset around an obstruction give lower friction loss than a pair of 90s and are the usual choice for jogging a line around a beam or another pipe. Use a 90 where you need a hard turn at a wall or a riser takeoff.
8) What spec does this PVC fitting meet, and what part number do I put on the submittal?
It is manufactured to ASTM D2467, the standard for Schedule 80 PVC socket-type fittings, and carries universal part number 817 for a 45-degree socket elbow. On the order, call out the Nibco 4506 plus the size: for example CA05200 is the 2 inch and CA05350 is the 4 inch.
9) Why is this PVC elbow dark grey instead of white?
Dark grey is the standard color convention for Schedule 80 PVC, while Schedule 40 is typically white. On a job with both schedules in the building, the color is how an inspector or the next tech tells at a glance which pressure class is in the wall.
