The dark grey PVC flush thread reducer bushing features a male pipe thread and a female pipe thread connection. Chemtrol® fittings connect PVC piping lengths together with solvent cementing, threading or flanging to create a highly reliable, leak-free system. Please refer to Chemtrol technical data sheets, chemical resistance guides and catalogs for engineering and installation information. PVC Schedule 80 has the highest long-term hydrostatic strength of any other major thermoplastic material used for piping. Chemtrol® PVC fittings are lightweight, easy to install, maintenance-free, and will not rust, scale, pit or corrode. Chemtrol® premium line of plastic fittings is backed by a 1-year limited warranty. Because Chemtrol® is a NIBCO brand the flow-control fittings are unsurpassed in quality, performance and longevity.

Nibco CA15800 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) How does the Nibco Chemtrol 4518 PVC Schedule 80 flush bushing connect, threaded or solvent weld?
Both ends are threaded, not socket. The Chemtrol 4518 flush bushing is male NPT on the large end and female NPT on the small end (M x F), so it threads into a female fitting and accepts a male threaded pipe or nipple on the reducing side. If your run is solvent cemented, you need a spigot x socket reducer bushing instead.
2) Can I use this PVC bushing on a hot water line?
No. Maximum service temperature is 140 degrees F, so it is not suitable for domestic hot water or any heated process line above that. Keep it on cold water, chemical feed, and irrigation service.
3) Is the Nibco Chemtrol Schedule 80 bushing approved for potable water?
It is certified to NSF/ANSI Standard 14 and NSF/ANSI/CAN 61, and it is classed as a lead-free application item, which is what a potable water spec calls for. It also carries ASTM D2467 for PVC Schedule 80 socket fittings.
4) What size reductions are available in the Nibco Chemtrol 4518 threaded bushing?
Reductions run from 1/2 inch x 1/4 inch up to 4 inch x 2 inch. The full range covers 1/2x1/4, 3/4x1/2, 3/4x1/4, 1x3/4, 1x1/2, 1x1/4, 1-1/4x1, 1-1/4x3/4, 1-1/2x1-1/4, 1-1/2x1, 1-1/2x3/4, 1-1/2x1/2, 2x1-1/2, 2x1-1/4, 2x1, 2x3/4, 2x1/2, 2-1/2x2, 3x2-1/2, 3x2, 3x1-1/2, 4x3 and 4x2. The first number is the male NPT size, the second is the female.
5) Will this dark grey bushing match my existing Schedule 80 PVC piping?
Yes, if the system is Schedule 80. The fitting is dark grey PVC, the standard color convention that separates Sch 80 from white Schedule 40, and it is built to Schedule 80 pressure-rated dimensions. It will not look or fit like a white Sch 40 fitting.
6) Do I need thread sealant or can I solvent cement this bushing?
It is a threaded joint on both ends, so it is made up with thread sealant, not cement. There is no socket on either side to cement into. If you want a cemented joint at that reduction, use a socket reducer bushing rather than this flush thread style.
7) Why choose PVC Schedule 80 over Schedule 40 for a threaded fitting?
Wall thickness. Threading cuts into the wall, so Schedule 80 is the schedule used where threads are required on a pressure line, and PVC Sch 80 carries the highest long-term hydrostatic strength of the major thermoplastic piping materials. Schedule 40 PVC is generally not threaded for pressure service.
8) What kind of systems is this Chemtrol reducer bushing used on?
Commercial plumbing, industrial process piping, and irrigation, including lead-free service. PVC Schedule 80 is chosen for these because it will not rust, scale, pit or corrode, which is why it shows up in chemical feed and water treatment work.
