Nibco CB18400 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Are the ends on this CPVC union socket or threaded?
Threaded, both ends. The 5133-3-3 is an F x F union with female NPT thread connections, so it screws onto male-threaded pipe or male adapters. If your run is solvent-cement socket pipe, you need CPVC male adapters at each side, or a socket-end union instead.
2) What temperature can a Corzan CPVC Sch 80 union handle?
Maximum service temperature is 210 degrees F. That is the headline reason to pick CPVC over PVC on a hot line, and it applies to the union body; check that whatever chemical is in the line is also rated at your operating temperature.
3) What is the O-ring in this union made of, and will it handle acids?
The seat seal is FKM fluoroelastomer, which suits most mineral acids, salt solutions, chlorinated hydrocarbons and petroleum oils. That is a different seal chemistry than the EPDM seals common on water-service unions, so on a chemical feed line the FKM version is usually the one specified.
4) Is this CPVC union approved for potable water?
It is listed to NSF/ANSI Standard 14 and NSF/ANSI/CAN 61, and also carries ASTM F1970. It is a lead-free application fitting, used on commercial plumbing, industrial, irrigation and lead-free systems.
5) Can I air test a CPVC piping system with these unions installed?
No. Do not use or test this fitting with compressed air or other gases. Thermoplastic systems are hydrostatically tested with water. Pressurizing with air risks a fracture that throws fragments.
6) Will this Nibco CPVC union fit Schedule 40 CPVC pipe?
It is a Schedule 80 fitting, but because it threads rather than sockets, it mates to any pipe carrying matching-size male NPT threads. Sch 80 is the schedule normally threaded, since Sch 40 CPVC wall is thin for cut threads. Match the NPT size and you are fine.
7) Why put a union in a CPVC line instead of just gluing it solid?
A union gives a disconnect point you can break without cutting pipe, which is what you want ahead of a pump, valve, strainer or meter that will come out for service. Since the 5133-3-3 is threaded female on both sides, you can back the nut off and lift the component clear, then reassemble on the same fitting.
8) Do I use pipe dope or Teflon tape on a threaded CPVC union?
Threads on this union are female NPT, so they seal with a thread sealant compatible with CPVC, typically PTFE tape or a plastic-safe paste. Do not over-torque plastic threads, and note that the union's own seal is the FKM seat at the nut, not the threads, so the nut does not get sealant.
