The PVC Schedule 40 coupling is used in cold water pressure distribution systems including irrigation, pool and spa, potable water and chilled water applications. Please refer to NIBCO technical data sheets and catalogs for engineering and installation information. Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) is the most frequently specified of all thermoplastic materials because of its light weight, durability and cost-effectiveness. PVC Schedule 40 is easy to install and is joined by solvent cementing or threading. PVC fittings exhibit high corrosion and chemical resistance and will not rust, scale, pit or corrode. NIBCO® plastic fittings are backed by a 5-year limited warranty. Because of its longstanding reputation for innovation and precision in design and manufacturing, NIBCO is the preferred brand in the industry.

Nibco L005100P – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Is the Nibco 4601-3-3 PVC coupling threaded or solvent weld?
It's a threaded coupling, female by female (FIPT on both ends). So it threads onto male-threaded pipe or nipples on each side, no primer and cement needed. If your run is plain-end pipe that gets solvent cemented, you want a socket x socket PVC coupling instead, not this one.
2) Can I use this PVC coupling on a hot water line?
No. Maximum service temperature is 140 degrees F, which rules out domestic hot water, boiler loops and hot process lines. It's built for cold water pressure service: irrigation, pool and spa, potable cold water and chilled water. For hot water you need CPVC or metal.
3) Is this Nibco PVC coupling approved for potable drinking water?
Yes. It's certified to NSF/ANSI/CAN-61 and NSF U.P. Certified for potable use, and it's listed as lead-free. Material is PVC compound meeting ASTM D1784 cell class 12454, with the fitting itself made to ASTM D2466.
4) Will this coupling work on a compressed air line in my shop?
No, and this one matters. Nibco states plainly: do not test or use with compressed air or other gases. PVC fails brittle under gas pressure. Use it for liquid service only, and pressure test with water.
5) What pipe sizes does the Nibco 4601-3-3 threaded PVC coupling come in?
Three sizes: 1/2 inch (MPN L805000), 3/4 inch (L805050) and 1 inch (L005100P). All are straight size, meaning both ends are the same size. For a size change you'd need a reducing coupling or a bushing.
6) Will this Nibco coupling mate with my existing Schedule 40 PVC pipe?
It's a Schedule 40 fitting with NPT female threads, so it threads onto Schedule 40 threaded PVC pipe or male adapters of the matching size. Note that only Schedule 80 PVC pipe is normally threaded in the field; thin-wall Schedule 40 pipe should not be cut with pipe threads, so on a Sch 40 system you'd typically bring a male adapter up to this coupling.
7) Is a threaded PVC coupling like this OK for buried irrigation mainline?
Irrigation is one of its listed system uses, along with commercial and residential plumbing. PVC won't rust, scale, pit or corrode, which is why it holds up in wet soil. Keep to cold water only and stay under 140 F. Threaded joints are the serviceable choice where you want to break the line later for a valve or repair.
8) Do I need primer, cement or thread sealant to install this?
No solvent cement or primer, since both ends are threaded rather than socket. You install it dry-fit plus a thread sealant suited to plastic, typically PTFE tape, and hand tighten plus a turn or two. Over-torquing a plastic female thread splits the hub. Nibco publishes plastic fittings installation instructions for the details.
