Nibco CB04550 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) How hot can this Corzan CPVC elbow run?
Maximum service temperature is 210 degrees F, which is why CPVC gets specified over PVC on hot water and heated process lines. Note that pressure rating drops as temperature climbs, so size the system off Chemtrol's pressure/temperature data for the service condition you are running.
2) Is this CPVC fitting approved for potable water?
It is listed to NSF/ANSI Standard 14 and NSF/ANSI/CAN 61, and is classified lead-free, so it suits potable commercial plumbing. The fitting also meets ASTM F439 for Schedule 80 threaded CPVC socket-type fittings.
3) Can I use this CPVC elbow on a compressed air line?
No. Chemtrol CPVC fittings must not be used or tested with compressed air or other gases. Keep it on liquid service: commercial plumbing, industrial process, and irrigation are the listed uses. Test hydrostatically, not with air.
4) What pipe sizes does this CPVC Schedule 80 threaded 45 elbow come in?
Ten sizes, 1/4, 1/2, 3/4, 1, 1-1/4, 1-1/2, 2, 2-1/2, 3 and 4 inch. Order by part number: CB04400 (1/4"), CB04450 (1/2"), CB04500 (3/4"), CB04550 (1"), CB04600 (1-1/4"), CB04650 (1-1/2"), CB04700 (2"), CB04750 (2-1/2"), CB04800 (3"), CB04850 (4"). Both ends are the same size, it is a straight-size elbow, so there is no reducing option.
5) Should I use a 45 degree elbow or a 90 here?
A 45 gives a gentler change of direction with less pressure loss and is what you use for offsets, jogging around an obstruction, or easing into a run at an angle. Use a 90 where the line has to turn square. This fitting is the 45 degree (1/8 bend) version only.
6) Do I need thread sealant on these CPVC threaded elbows, and how tight?
Threaded CPVC joints are made with a PTFE tape or a thread sealant rated compatible with CPVC, never a petroleum-based pipe dope. Hand tighten plus one to two turns with a strap wrench; over-torquing splits the female socket, which is the usual failure on plastic threaded fittings. Where the joint will be permanent and no disassembly is needed, a solvent cement socket fitting is the stronger choice than threading.
7) Will a light grey CPVC 45 elbow match my existing Schedule 80 CPVC piping?
Corzan CPVC Schedule 80 pipe and fittings are light grey, and this elbow is light grey, so it blends with an existing Corzan system. Grey also tells an inspector at a glance it is CPVC Sch 80 rather than white Sch 40 PVC or dark grey Sch 80 PVC.
8) Will CPVC hold up in a buried or corrosive industrial line?
Yes. Corzan CPVC Schedule 80 will not rust, scale, pit or corrode, and is noted for underground performance and good hydraulics. For a specific chemical or concentration, check it against Chemtrol's chemical resistance guide before committing the run.
