Nibco CB06050 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Does the Nibco Chemtrol 5107-3-3 CPVC elbow have threaded ends or socket ends?
Both ends are female NPT thread, so the 5107-3-3 is an F x F threaded 90 degree elbow. You thread it onto male-threaded pipe nipples or male adapters, no solvent cement joint at the fitting itself. If your run is being solvent welded, you need a socket (slip) elbow instead, not this one.
2) How hot can this CPVC elbow run?
Maximum service temperature is 210 degrees F, which is why Corzan CPVC gets specified over standard PVC on hot water and heated process lines. Keep in mind that pressure rating on any thermoplastic falls off as temperature climbs, so a line running near the top of that range carries far less pressure than it does at ambient.
3) Can I use this Nibco CPVC elbow on potable water in a commercial building?
Yes. It is a lead-free fitting certified to NSF/ANSI Standard 14 and NSF/ANSI/CAN 61, the two listings plumbing inspectors look for on potable water components. System uses called out include commercial plumbing, industrial and irrigation.
4) Can I air test a CPVC Schedule 80 line built with these Chemtrol fittings?
No. Do not use or test these CPVC fittings with compressed air or other gases. Pressure test with water only. Air testing thermoplastic pipe is the failure mode that hurts people, and it will void the way this fitting is intended to be used.
5) Is this Schedule 80 elbow compatible with Schedule 40 CPVC pipe?
The fitting is Schedule 80 and conforms to ASTM F439 for CPVC Schedule 80 threaded fittings. Because the ends are female NPT, the thread size governs, not the pipe wall, so it will accept a male NPT connection of the same nominal size regardless of the pipe schedule behind it. That said, Schedule 40 CPVC pipe should not be threaded, its wall is too thin, so threaded joints in a CPVC system belong on Schedule 80 pipe or on a molded male adapter.
6) What does this fitting actually do in the run, and do I need anything else to install it?
It turns a line 90 degrees, a quarter bend, with the same size in and out. Since both ends are female NPT, you also need male-threaded pipe or male adapters plus a thread sealant rated for CPVC. No solvent cement is required at this fitting. Do not overtighten, threaded plastic fittings split when you wrench them past hand tight plus a turn or two.
7) Why is this CPVC elbow light grey instead of the usual tan or white?
Light grey is the Corzan CPVC Schedule 80 color. Tan or cream typically flags CTS CPVC potable tube and white flags PVC, so the grey is a quick visual cue on a jobsite that you are looking at Schedule 80 CPVC industrial pipe rather than PVC. Handy when you are matching an existing run before ordering.
8) Will CPVC hold up in a corrosive industrial line better than metal pipe?
Corzan CPVC will not rust, scale, pit or corrode, which is the usual reason it replaces steel or copper on chemical and process lines. It is also light enough to install without threading machines or torches. Check the Chemtrol chemical resistance guide against your specific media before committing, since chemical compatibility varies by the fluid and its concentration.
