This fitting has an EPDM ethylene propylene seal which has good abrasion and tear resistance, plus excellent chemical resistance, but not recommended for applications involving petroleum oils or most strong acids. 1) What connections does the Nibco Chemtrol 4533E3 PVC Schedule 80 union have on each end?
One end is a female socket for solvent cementing to PVC pipe, the other is a female NPT thread. That S x F (NPT) arrangement makes it a transition union: cement it into a PVC line on one side and thread a male pipe nipple or threaded valve into the other, with the union nut letting you break the joint later without cutting pipe.
2) What is the maximum temperature for this PVC Schedule 80 union?
140 degrees F is the maximum service temperature. Above that, PVC loses pressure capability fast, so hot water or steam lines need CPVC or metal instead. Keep in mind pressure ratings de-rate as you approach that ceiling.
3) Is the EPDM seal in this union OK for my chemical line?
The seat seal is EPDM rubber, which handles abrasion, tearing and a wide range of chemicals well, but it is not recommended for petroleum oils or most strong acids. If your process runs oil, fuel or concentrated acid, specify a union with a different elastomer seal rather than this one.
4) Can this union be used on potable water in a commercial building?
Yes. The union is listed to NSF/ANSI Standard 14 and NSF/ANSI/CAN-61, and is flagged lead-free, which is what an inspector looks for on a potable system. It is also used on industrial and irrigation piping.
5) Can I use this PVC union on a compressed air line?
No. The manufacturer states not to use or test this fitting with compressed air or other gases. That includes pressure-testing the system with air. Hydrostatic test with water only, and run air service in metal.
6) Why use a union here instead of a coupling or a threaded adapter?
A coupling or solvent-weld adapter is permanent, you cut it out to service the line. This union has a nut that unthreads so the joint can be broken and remade. Put one on each side of a pump, strainer or valve and the equipment comes out without touching the pipe. With the socket x FNPT configuration it also doubles as your transition from solvent weld to threaded equipment.
7) Is Schedule 80 PVC strong enough for an industrial process line?
PVC Schedule 80 carries the highest long-term hydrostatic strength of any major thermoplastic piping material, and it will not rust, scale, pit or corrode, which is why it is common on industrial and irrigation systems. The limits to watch are the 140 degree F service ceiling and the ban on gas service.
8) Do I need thread sealant on the NPT end of this PVC union?
The threaded end is female NPT and mates with a standard male pipe thread. Use PTFE tape or a plastic-safe thread sealant and hand-tighten plus a turn or two with a strap wrench, not a pipe wrench. Over-torquing a plastic female thread splits the hub. The socket end is solvent-cemented with primer and PVC cement rated for Schedule 80.
