The ABS DWV cap features a hub connection to fit over the end of a pipe to create a seal. Please refer to NIBCO technical data sheets and catalogs for engineering and installation information. Acrylonitrile-Butadiene-Styrene (ABS) is resistant to a wide variety of materials ranging from sewage to commercial household chemical formulations and can be exposed to a wide temperature span. ABS is lightweight, safe to handle and easy to install. ABS DWV is joined by solvent cementing or threading and can easily be connected to steel, copper, or cast iron through the use of transition fittings. NIBCO® plastic fittings are backed by a 5-year limited warranty. Because of its longstanding reputation for innovation and precision in design and manufacturing, NIBCO is the preferred brand in the industry.

Nibco I175101 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Will a Nibco 5817 ABS cap fit Schedule 40 PVC DWV pipe?
The 5817 is Schedule 40 ABS, so it matches Schedule 40 ABS DWV pipe dimensionally, but it is an ABS fitting and ABS cement will not properly bond it to PVC. For a PVC line, use a PVC DWV cap of the same size, or make the changeover with a transition fitting rated for the joint. ABS DWV in this family is joined by solvent cementing or threading, and transitions to steel, copper or cast iron are made with transition fittings.
2) Does the Nibco 5817 cap thread on or does it have to be glued?
It is a hub (H) socket cap, solvent weld only. The hub slips over the outside of the pipe and is cemented with ABS solvent cement. There are no threads on it, so if you need a removable cap for a cleanout or a test port, you want a threaded plug and a female adapter instead of this one.
3) Can I use this ABS cap to pressure test a drain line with air?
No. The instruction on this ABS DWV cap is explicit: do not test or use with compressed air or other gases. Use water for testing. It is a drain, waste and vent fitting, not a pressure fitting.
4) Is this ABS cap approved for use on a commercial building drain system?
It is listed for both commercial and residential plumbing. The standards called out are CSA B181.1, ASTM D2665, ASTM D3965, ASTM D2661 and D3311, UL Listed 94V-0, NSF/ANSI Standard 14, and NSF U.P. Certified. That combination is what most inspectors look for on ABS DWV fittings, so check which ones your local code names.
5) What temperature range can an ABS DWV cap handle?
Service temperature on the Nibco 5817 ABS cap runs -40 F to 180 F. That covers normal sanitary drainage and vent service, including unconditioned attic and crawlspace runs, but it rules out sustained high temperature waste. ABS also resists everything from sewage to common household chemical formulations.
6) What do I use an ABS DWV cap like this for on the job?
A hub cap seals off the open end of an ABS drain, waste or vent pipe permanently. Typical uses are capping a stubbed future connection, dead-ending an unused branch, or closing a line during rough-in before a water test. Because it cements on, treat it as permanent; plan on cutting it off if the branch is ever put back into service.
7) What color is the Nibco 5817 cap, and will it match the rest of my ABS drain fittings?
Black, which is the standard color for ABS DWV, so it blends with black ABS pipe and fittings already in the building. If the existing piping on the job is white, that is PVC and this cap is the wrong material for it.
