1) Does the Nibco 5827 ABS DWV cap glue on or thread on?
It threads on. The 5827 cap has a female NPT thread, so it screws onto a male-threaded pipe end or a male adapter rather than being solvent welded. If your pipe end is plain (unthreaded) ABS, you either need a male adapter first or a socket-type cap made for solvent cementing.
2) Can I use this ABS cap to air test a drain line?
No. Nibco states plainly not to test or use ABS DWV fittings with compressed air or other gases. Use water for test pressure on the line. The 5827 cap is a drain, waste and vent fitting, not a pressure fitting.
3) Is the Nibco 5827 cap approved for commercial plumbing, and what standards does it meet?
It is listed for both commercial and residential plumbing use, and Nibco cites CSA B181.1, ASTM D2665, D3965, D2661 and D3311, UL Listed 94V-0, NSF/ANSI Standard 14 and NSF U.P. Certified. That covers the usual inspector questions on an ABS DWV system.
4) What temperature range can an ABS DWV cap handle?
Service temperature runs -40 F to 180 F. That covers normal waste and vent duty, including hot sink and dishwasher discharge, but it rules out anything running continuously above 180 F.
5) Will this cap thread onto a steel or cast iron pipe stub?
The 5827 is a Schedule 40 female NPT cap, so it mates to standard NPT male threads. Nibco notes ABS DWV can be connected to steel, copper or cast iron through transition fittings, so for anything other than a clean NPT male thread, go through the appropriate transition fitting rather than forcing the plastic cap onto it.
6) What color is the Nibco 5827 cap, and will it match my existing DWV fittings?
Black, which is the standard ABS DWV color, so it matches black ABS drain lines. If your building is piped in white PVC DWV, this is the wrong material family for a cemented joint, though a threaded NPT connection between the two systems is a different matter than solvent welding.
