Please refer to NIBCO technical data sheets and catalogs for engineering and installation information. Nibco I175400 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Nibco 5817-P test cap fit 4 inch ABS DWV pipe?
The 5817-P is a 4 inch ABS DWV test cap with a solvent weld socket, so it slips over the outside of 4 inch Schedule 40 ABS DWV pipe and is cemented in place. It is sold in the 4 inch size only (MPN I175400). For other pipe sizes you need a different size cap.
2) Can I use this ABS cap for an air pressure test on a DWV stack?
No. Nibco's instructions for the 5817-P state not to test or use it with compressed air or other gases. It is meant for water testing of drain, waste and vent lines. Use a water head test, not air.
3) Is a solvent weld test cap removable after the inspection passes?
Not in the way a mechanical cap is. The 5817-P is cemented into the pipe end to create a permanent seal, so it gets cut off after the test rather than unscrewed. If you need a cap you can take off and reuse, look for a threaded or mechanical expandable plug instead.
4) Can I glue a black ABS cap onto white PVC drain pipe?
The 5817-P is an ABS fitting, and ABS and PVC are different plastics that use different cements. Match the cap to the pipe material: use this black ABS cap on ABS DWV pipe. Where you genuinely have to cross materials, ABS DWV is joined to steel, copper or cast iron through transition fittings.
5) What temperature range can an ABS DWV test cap handle?
Service temperature runs from -40 F to 180 F. That covers normal drain, waste and vent service including hot water discharge from fixtures, but it is not a pressure piping material and should not see steam or boiler lines.
6) Is this cap suitable for a residential rough-in inspection?
Yes, that is the intended use. The 5817-P is listed for residential plumbing service on Schedule 40 ABS DWV lines, and it is solvent welded into the open pipe end so the system can be filled and water tested.
7) What do I need besides the cap itself to install it?
The 5817-P ships as the cap only. You supply ABS solvent cement (and cleaner if your local code calls for it), plus a saw or cutter to remove the cap after the test. Nibco publishes plastic fittings installation instructions covering the joining procedure.
8) Will an ABS cap stand up to drain cleaners and sewage?
ABS resists a wide range of materials from sewage through common household chemical formulations, which is why it is used for drain, waste and vent work. The 5817-P is black ABS throughout.
