1) Does the Nibco 620-L air chamber solder into a fitting socket or over the pipe?
The 620-L has a male solder end, what Nibco calls Ftg. That means the end is sized to slip INTO the socket of another copper fitting, not over pipe. So it drops straight into the branch of a tee or the cup of a 90 without an extra adapter. If your opening is a length of copper tube with nothing on it, you need a coupling or a female-socket connection first.
2) What sizes and lengths does the Nibco 620-L air chamber come in?
Five combinations: 1/2 inch in 6, 8, 10 and 12 inch lengths, plus 3/4 inch in 12 inch. The 1/2 inch sizes cover typical fixture branches at a lav, sink or washer box; the 3/4 inch x 12 inch is the one to use where the branch itself is 3/4 inch, such as a laundry supply or a longer run feeding a quick-closing valve.
3) Can I use a copper air chamber on potable drinking water in a commercial building?
Yes. The 620-L is lead-free and certified to NSF/ANSI/CAN 61 and 372, which are the potable water contact and lead content standards inspectors look for. The listed system uses run from residential and commercial plumbing through HVAC, heating, irrigation, fire protection, compressed air, industrial and med-gas service.
4) Will a Nibco 620-L air chamber stop banging pipes at a washing machine box?
That is what it is built for. The 620-L controls water hammer in above-ground hot and cold water supply lines, in new construction or an existing building. Quick-closing solenoid valves like a washer or dishwasher are the usual culprit, so a chamber goes on each hot and cold branch as close to the valve as you can get it. For a 1/2 inch branch the 12 inch length gives you the most air volume of the 1/2 inch options.
5) What is the difference between using the 620-L as an air chamber and as a stub-out?
Same part, two jobs. Used vertically above a branch tee it is a dead-leg air cushion against water hammer. Roughed in through a wall with the Ftg end into a fitting, it serves as the stub-out that the fixture supply stop later lands on. Nibco classes it under both names, and the longer 10 and 12 inch pieces are the ones that give you enough stick-out past finished wall.
6) What material and alloy is the Nibco 620-L, and will it hold up in aggressive water?
Wrot copper, ASTM B75 alloy C12200, and dezincification resistant, which is the failure mode that plagues brass parts in aggressive or high-chloride water. Being copper it also meets the material and workmanship requirements of ASME B16.22, with dimensions per MSS SP-104. Copper is reusable at end of life, which is why it scores well on sustainable projects.
7) Can the 620-L be press-fit or threaded instead of soldered?
No. It is a solder-only fitting, joined with flux and solder (or brazed) into a copper socket. There is no press bead and no thread on it. If your system is being run with press fittings, you will need a press-by-female-socket transition to pick up this chamber, or select a press-style water hammer arrestor instead.
8) Which Nibco part number do I order for a 3/4 inch air chamber?
The 3/4 inch size is offered in one length, 12 inches, under Nibco MPN 9195650. The 1/2 inch versions are 9194500 (6 inch), 9194550 (8 inch), 9194600 (10 inch) and 9194650 (12 inch).
9) Can I install a 620-L air chamber underground or in a buried line?
No. It is specified for above-ground hot and cold water supply lines. For buried work, use a different approach; a dead-leg air chamber also needs to be accessible and oriented vertically to keep its air cushion, which a buried installation defeats.
