Nibco NLQ100F – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Is the Nibco LC-2000 butterfly valve lead free for potable water?
Yes, it's a lead-free valve and it's called out against California Health and Safety Code Section 116875 and Vermont Act 193, which are the two statutes that drive lead-free compliance on potable water systems. The wetted trim is an aluminum bronze disc with a stainless steel stem and an EPDM molded-in seat liner.
2) Is the EPDM seat on the Nibco LC-2000 right for my system fluid?
EPDM is the seat material, and it's the one Nibco recommends for most water applications, which is why this valve shows up on chilled water, condenser water, hot water heating and irrigation. EPDM is not the seat you want in petroleum-based fluids. If your loop carries a glycol or a chemical additive, check it against the fluid before you commit, because the seat is molded in and is not a field-replaceable part.
3) Do I need a separate gasket between the LC-2000 butterfly valve and my flanges?
No. The EPDM seat liner on the LC-2000 is molded in and wraps the body face, so it seats directly against the flange and does its own sealing. Adding flange gaskets on top of it is a common field mistake and it throws off the disc clearance. Bolt it up flange to valve face, and watch that the disc has room to swing clear before you fully open it.
4) What standards does the Nibco LC-2000 cast iron butterfly valve meet?
It's designed to meet MSS SP-67 and API 609, marked per MSS SP-25, and carries U.S. Coast Guard Category A. MSS SP-67 is the butterfly valve standard a mechanical spec normally cites, and API 609 covers lug and wafer bodies, so between them it answers most submittal sheets on commercial and industrial water systems.
5) Will the LC-2000 butterfly valve work if my pipe is insulated?
Yes. The LC-2000 has an extended neck that clears insulation up to 2 inches thick, so the operator sits above the jacket instead of being buried in it. On chilled water especially, that means the insulation contractor can run continuous covering up to the valve without cutting the handle free.
6) Can the Nibco LC-2000 butterfly valve be used for balancing or throttling, or only for shutoff?
Both. It's listed for balancing and control as well as isolation, and it's a quarter-turn valve, 90 degrees open to close. For throttling duty order it with the infinite position plate and lock so the disc stays put at the set position instead of drifting, or the gear operator if you want fine adjustment.
7) Are there pins or bolts through the disc on the Nibco LC-2000 that could leak?
No pins, no bolts. The LC-2000 drives the disc through an internal stem-to-disc geometric fit, so there's nothing penetrating the disc that can create a leak path or add turbulence in the waterway. The stem is stainless steel running in copper bushings. That's worth knowing on a service call, because pinned-disc designs are where you go looking when a butterfly valve weeps at the stem.
