Nibco NBC-N200235 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can I use this Nibco cast iron butterfly valve as an end-of-line valve so I can isolate one branch without draining the system?
Yes. The Nibco international cast iron butterfly valve is a lug body, so the bolt holes are tapped and each flange bolts in independently. That lets you remove downstream pipe or equipment with the valve holding line pressure on the upstream side, which a wafer body cannot do. End connection is listed as L - Lug.
2) Is this Nibco butterfly valve OK for steam?
No. The cast iron butterfly valve with EPDM seat is not recommended for steam service. It is rated 225 F continuous and 250 F intermittent, and the EPDM cartridge seat with aluminum bronze disc is intended for water. For steam you need a different valve type and seat material.
3) What pressure and temperature can the Nibco N200235 butterfly valve handle in a chilled water or condenser water loop?
Rated at 200 PSI, with 225 F continuous and 250 F intermittent service. That covers typical commercial chilled water, condenser water and heating water loops. Listed system uses are commercial plumbing, HVAC and irrigation.
4) Should I order the lever handle or the gear operator on this Nibco butterfly valve?
Lever-lock handles are offered from 2 inch up through 8 inch, and the gear operator is offered from 4 inch through 12 inch. On the overlapping 4, 5, 6 and 8 inch sizes the lever gives you fast quarter-turn operation and a throttling lock; the gear operator reduces the effort needed against line pressure and is the practical choice on larger lines or where the valve is hard to reach. A bare stem version is also part of the operating options for actuation.
5) Will the handle clear pipe insulation on an insulated chilled water line?
Yes. The valve has an extended neck that allows for insulation up to 2 inches thick, so the operator sits clear of the jacketing instead of forcing you to cut back the insulation around the valve.
6) What pipe sizes does the Nibco international cast iron butterfly valve come in?
Sizes run 2, 2-1/2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 8 inch with the lever-lock handle, and 4, 5, 6, 8, 10 and 12 inch with the manual gear operator. If you are standardizing a building on one valve family, note that 2, 2-1/2 and 3 inch are lever only, and 10 and 12 inch are gear only.
7) What standards does this Nibco cast iron butterfly valve meet for a spec job?
It is designed to meet MSS SP-67 and API 609, with markings per MSS SP-25. Those are the usual references on a commercial mechanical spec for a rubber-seated butterfly valve.
8) What are the wetted materials, and will the seat hold up in a glycol or treated water system?
Body is cast iron, disc is aluminum bronze, stem is stainless steel with bronze bushings, and the seat is an EPDM rubber cartridge liner. EPDM with an aluminum bronze disc is the recommended combination for most water applications. Because the seat is a cartridge, it is a replaceable liner rather than a bonded rubber body. For an unusual fluid, check the Nibco chemical resistance guide before committing.
9) Do I need to order a separate actuator mounting kit if I plan to automate this valve later?
The valve is offered with a bare stem option in addition to the lever-lock and manual gear operator, and bare stem is the version you start from for a powered actuator. If you buy a lever or gear operated unit, the operator is what ships on the valve. Specify bare stem up front if the plan is electric or pneumatic actuation.
10) I need the exact Nibco part number for a 6 inch gear operated cast iron butterfly valve. What is it?
The 6 inch gear operated version is NLJ310K. The gear operated series runs NLJ310H (4 inch), NLJ310J (5 inch), NLJ310K (6 inch), NLJ310L (8 inch), NLJ310M (10 inch) and NLJ310N (12 inch). Lever-lock versions use the NLJ300 prefix, for example NLJ300K for 6 inch.
