1) What pipe sizes does the Nibco cast iron wafer butterfly valve come in, and when do I need the gear operator instead of the lever?
Sizes run 2 inch through 12 inch, but the operator splits them. Lever-lock is offered from 2 inch up to 8 inch (2, 2-1/2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8). The manual gear operator covers 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12 inch. So anything above 8 inch is gear only, and 4, 6 and 8 inch can be ordered either way. Pick the gear operator on the larger lines or where line pressure makes a lever hard to throw and you want controlled, non-slam closure; the lever-lock gives you a fast quarter turn with notched position holding.
2) Can I use this Nibco butterfly valve on a steam line?
No. The EPDM seated cast iron butterfly valve is not recommended for steam service. Its limits are 225 degrees F continuous and 250 degrees F intermittent, and EPDM is a water and glycol seat material. For steam, go to a different valve type and seat material.
3) Is a wafer body butterfly valve OK for end-of-line service where I need to remove downstream pipe?
No. A wafer valve is clamped between two flanges and relies on both sides of the joint to stay sealed, so it is not the choice for dead-end or end-of-line isolation where you plan to strip the downstream piping off. Use a lug body valve for that. This Nibco valve is wafer style, meant to sit mid-line between ANSI flanges.
4) Will the handle clear pipe insulation on a chilled water line?
Yes, up to 2 inches. The valve has an extended neck that lifts the operator above the pipe, so 2 inch insulation can be carried past the body without cutting back around the handle or gear box. That is the usual reason this valve gets specified on chilled water.
5) Which Nibco part number do I order for a 6 inch gear operated butterfly valve?
NLJ110K is the 6 inch gear operator version. The 6 inch lever-lock is NLJ100K. The pattern holds across the line: NLJ100 is the lever-lock series and NLJ110 is the gear operator series, with the trailing letter setting the size, so a 4 inch lever is NLJ100H and a 12 inch gear is NLJ110N.
6) What is the pressure rating on this cast iron butterfly valve?
200 psi. That covers typical commercial chilled water, hot water heating and condenser water service, along with irrigation mains, as long as the temperature stays inside the 225 degrees F continuous limit.
7) What are the disc and stem made of on this Nibco butterfly valve?
Aluminum bronze disc, stainless steel stem running in bronze bushings, cast iron body, with an EPDM cartridge seat liner. That combination is aimed at ordinary water service, chilled and hot water HVAC loops, commercial plumbing and irrigation.

The lever-lock version indexes at positions through the 90 degree travel, and the gear operator lets you stop the disc anywhere and hold it, so partial positioning is possible. For anything other than rough balancing, size the valve for the duty rather than running it near closed, since a butterfly disc sitting in the flow path at low openings puts wear on the EPDM seat.
