Nibco MA064AA – Frequently Asked Questions

1) How does this Chemtrol valve connect to the pipe - is it solvent weld or threaded?
Socket connection, solvent welded, cut to ASTM D2467 for Schedule 80 PVC. You cement the valve directly onto plain-end Sch 80 PVC pipe with primer and solvent cement. If your line is already threaded, you either need threaded-end valve or male adapters into these sockets.
2) What pressure and temperature can the S45CE-E ball valve handle?
Rated 150 psi at 73 degrees F on water, non-shock. Maximum service temperature is 113 degrees F, and at that temperature the rating drops to 112 psi. Like all PVC, it loses pressure capacity as the fluid gets warmer, so size your system off the temperature you actually run.
3) Can I use this PVC ball valve on a compressed air line?
No. Chemtrol states plainly not to use or test this valve with compressed air or other gases. PVC valves under gas pressure can fail suddenly. Keep it on liquid service, and pressure test with water only.
4) Is this Nibco Chemtrol valve approved for potable water?
It carries NSF/ANSI Standard 14, NSF/ANSI/CAN-61 and NSF/ANSI/CAN-372, and it is listed as a lead-free application, which is the set of listings potable water work is specified against. It also meets ASTM F1970.
5) EPDM or Viton seals - which one do I need for my chemical line?
The S45CE-E is the EPDM build: EPDM O-rings and EPDM rubber seat seals. EPDM suits water, irrigation and many dilute acids and bases, but it is not the right elastomer for petroleum oils or hydrocarbons. If your media is oil based, specify a FKM/Viton sealed version of the valve instead. Nibco also publishes a warning on plastics incompatibility with POE refrigeration oils that is worth reading before you commit.
6) What is the difference between a compact economy PVC ball valve and a true union ball valve?
The compact economy body on the S45CE-E is solvent welded solid into the line. It is lighter, cheaper and takes less space, but servicing it means cutting it out. A true union valve has union nuts at both ends so you can break it out and rebuild the seals in place. For irrigation zones, drains and lines you expect to run maintenance-free, the compact body is the sensible pick; for a process line you will service, go true union.
7) Will PVC Schedule 80 hold up in a corrosive industrial line?
Sch 80 PVC is the workhorse here. It resists corrosion well and has the highest long term hydrostatic strength of the major thermoplastics used for piping, and it will not rust, scale, pit or corrode the way metal valves do. Chemtrol lists it for commercial plumbing, industrial and irrigation service. Check your specific chemical against a compatibility chart before committing, since PVC is not universal.
8) What does the valve look like installed - can maintenance staff spot it in a mechanical room?
