Nibco MA063AA – Frequently Asked Questions

1) How does the T45CE-V PVC ball valve connect to the pipe, and do I need solvent cement?
No cement. The T45CE-V is a threaded valve with female NPT ends cut to ASME B1.20.1, so it threads straight onto male pipe threads with tape or pipe dope. If your system is solvent-welded PVC, you either use male adapters into the valve or pick a socket-end version instead.
2) What pressure and temperature can this Chemtrol PVC Schedule 80 ball valve handle?
Rated 150 psi at 73 degrees F on water, non-shock. As the fluid gets warmer the rating drops: maximum service temperature is 113 degrees F, and at that point the valve is good for 112 psi. Hot water lines above that are outside what this valve will do.
3) Can I use this PVC ball valve on a compressed air line?
No. Nibco states plainly that the T45CE-V must not be used or tested with compressed air or other gases. That includes pressure testing, so hydrostatic test the line with water only. Air in a thermoplastic valve can fail explosively.
4) Is this valve approved for potable water?
Yes. The T45CE-V carries NSF/ANSI Standard 14, NSF/ANSI/CAN-61 and NSF/ANSI/CAN-372, and it also meets ASTM F1970. The -372 listing is the lead-free one, so it is acceptable on potable water systems as well as irrigation and industrial lines.
5) Is the FKM seal the right choice, or should I get an EPDM version?
The -V in T45CE-V means FKM fluoroelastomer seats and O-ring. FKM is the pick for aggressive chemical service, oils and hydrocarbons. EPDM is the usual alternative and handles a different chemical range, so match the elastomer to the fluid you are running before ordering. Nibco also publishes a plastics incompatibility warning covering POE and similar fluids that is worth reading for chemical service.
6) Can this valve be serviced in place, or does it get replaced when the seals go?
The T45CE-V is the compact economy body, not a true union design, so there are no union nuts to break loose and rebuild in line. Nibco describes these valves as maintenance-free. For a line where you expect to service seats periodically, specify a true union PVC ball valve instead.
7) Will PVC Schedule 80 hold up in a corrosive chemical line better than metal?
That is the reason to use it. Schedule 80 PVC has strong corrosion resistance and the highest long-term hydrostatic strength of the major thermoplastic piping materials, and it will not rust, scale, pit or corrode the way a bronze or iron valve does in chemical and industrial service. The tradeoff is the temperature ceiling and no gas service.
8) What does the valve look like installed, for matching what is already on the wall?
Dark grey Schedule 80 PVC body with a blue handle and blue cap. If your existing Chemtrol valves are grey bodies with blue handles, this matches that look. The compact body also takes up less room than a full-size true union valve, which matters in a tight manifold.
