1) What pipe size and connection does the Nibco T45YP-V PVC globe valve use?
The T45YP-V is a 3/4 inch valve with female NPT (FIP) threaded end connections, so it threads directly onto male-threaded Schedule 80 PVC or compatible threaded pipe ends. No solvent welding involved. Use thread sealant appropriate for plastic threads and do not over-tighten.
2) Can I use this PVC Y-pattern globe valve on a compressed air line?
No. The T45YP-V is not to be used or tested with compressed air or other gases. It is a liquid-service valve only. Putting a thermoplastic valve on compressed gas risks a fragmentation failure, so use a valve rated for gas service instead.
3) What is the pressure and temperature limit on the Nibco T45YP-V globe valve?
Rated 150 psi at 73 degrees F with non-shock water, and a maximum service temperature of 140 degrees F. Remember that PVC pressure ratings fall off as temperature rises, so a line running near 140 F will not hold anywhere near the full 150 psi.
4) Is the FKM seal on this Nibco valve the right choice for my chemical?
The T45YP-V carries an FKM (Viton-type) O-ring rather than EPDM. FKM suits many acids, hydrocarbons and oxidizers, but it is the wrong elastomer for some chemicals where EPDM is preferred. Nibco directs you to the Chemtrol chemical resistance guides and technical data sheets to confirm the media against both the PVC body and the FKM seal before you install.
5) Does the Nibco T45YP-V meet potable water standards for a commercial building?
It is certified to NSF/ANSI Standard 14 and NSF/ANSI/CAN 61, and also complies with ASTM F1970. It is listed as a lead-free application valve, which is what a spec for potable service in a commercial or institutional building generally calls for.
6) Should I use a Y-pattern globe valve or a ball valve for throttling flow?
For throttling, the Y-pattern globe valve is the right choice. Its multi-turn operation gives precise flow control as well as on/off, where a quarter-turn ball valve is really an open/shut device and erodes its seat when parked part-open. The angled Y body also cuts pressure drop compared with a straight-through globe pattern. If all you need is isolation, a ball valve is the simpler part.
7) Can I glue this valve into a socket-fusion or solvent weld PVC run?
Not directly. This version of the T45YP is threaded FIP only, so a solvent-weld run needs male adapters at each side to transition to the valve. If you would rather avoid the threaded joints, specify the socket end version of the Chemtrol Y-pattern globe valve instead.
8) Will the stem on this PVC globe valve gum up from the fluid it's controlling?
No. On the T45YP-V the fluid never touches the stem threads, so the threads stay clean and the valve opens and closes fast without scaling or binding from the media. That is one of the reasons the Chemtrol PVC valves are described as maintenance-free, and the PVC body will not rust, scale, pit or corrode.
