Nibco MA065AA – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Is the T45CE-E threaded or solvent weld?
Threaded, female NPT per ASME B1.20.1. That means it can be unthreaded from the line for service or replacement without cutting pipe, which is the practical reason to pick it over a socket solvent-weld valve. Use PTFE tape or an approved thread sealant and hand-tighten plus a turn or two only, over-torquing plastic female threads splits the body.
2) What pressure and temperature can this PVC ball valve handle?
150 psi at 73 degrees F with non-shock water. Rating falls off as the fluid warms: at the maximum service temperature of 113 degrees F it is down to 112 psi. Anything hotter than that is outside the valve's range and calls for CPVC or metal.
3) Can I use a Chemtrol PVC ball valve on a compressed air line?
No. The manufacturer states plainly not to use or test it with compressed air or other gases. Plastic valves fail energetically under stored gas pressure. Keep it on liquid service, and pressure-test with water only.
4) Is this valve approved for potable water?
It carries NSF/ANSI Standard 14, NSF/ANSI/CAN 61 and NSF/ANSI/CAN 372, and is flagged lead-free, which is the certification set specifiers look for on potable plumbing. It is also listed to ASTM F1970 for plastic valve performance.
5) EPDM or Viton seals: which one do I need for my chemical line?
The T45CE-E is the EPDM build, with EPDM O-rings and an EPDM seat seal. EPDM suits water, dilute acids and bases, and general irrigation or plumbing duty. It is the wrong choice for petroleum products and oils, where an FKM/Viton-sealed version of the valve is called for instead. Nibco also publishes a plastics incompatibility warning covering POE and similar refrigeration oils, worth reading before putting any PVC valve on an oil-bearing system.
6) Why Schedule 80 PVC rather than Schedule 40 for a valve?
Schedule 80 is the heavier wall, and Nibco notes PVC Sch 80 has excellent corrosion resistance and the highest long-term hydrostatic strength of the major thermoplastics used in piping. It will not rust, scale, pit or corrode, which is why it turns up on chemical feed, irrigation and industrial water where a bronze or steel valve would be eaten. Sch 80 threaded valves will still join to Sch 40 threaded pipe of the same nominal size, since NPT threads are common to both.
7) Is this valve suitable for an irrigation shutoff or is it strictly industrial?
Both. Nibco lists commercial plumbing, industrial and irrigation as intended system uses for this valve. For buried or valve-box irrigation work the PVC body is an advantage, there is nothing to corrode, and the threaded ends let a tech replace it without cutting into glued pipe.
8) What does this valve look like so I can match the others on my system?
Dark grey Schedule 80 body with a blue handle and a red cap on the handle nut. That blue/red handle is the Chemtrol identifier, so if the rest of the manifold already uses Chemtrol compact valves it will look consistent.
