1) Will the Nibco S45CE-V socket ball valve glue onto standard Schedule 80 PVC pipe?
Yes. The S45CE-V is a socket end valve, and the socket dimensions follow ASTM D2467, which is the Schedule 80 PVC socket-fitting standard. You solvent weld it into the line the same way you would any Sch 80 socket fitting, so the pipe OD has to match the nominal size you order: 1/2, 3/4, 1, 1-1/2 or 2 inch. There is no union or threaded joint here, so plan the pipe runs knowing the valve becomes a permanent part of the line once cemented.
2) What pressure and temperature can a Chemtrol S45CE-V PVC ball valve handle?
150 psi at 73 degrees F on water, non-shock. Maximum service temperature is 113 degrees F, and at that temperature the rating drops to 112 psi. PVC loses pressure capability as it warms, so size the system around the hottest temperature the line actually sees, not the 73 degree number. Hot water service is out of range for this valve.
3) Can I use this PVC ball valve on a compressed air line?
No. The S45CE-V carries an explicit instruction not to use or test it with compressed air or other gases. That covers pressure testing too, so do not air-test the line with this valve installed. It is a liquid service valve: commercial plumbing, industrial process, and irrigation are the uses it is built for. For air, go to a metal valve rated for gas service.
4) Why does this Nibco valve have FKM seals instead of EPDM, and what does that change for my chemicals?
The S45CE-V uses an FKM fluoroelastomer seat seal and an FKM O-ring. FKM is the choice when the media is a petroleum-based or aggressive oxidizing chemical that would attack EPDM. The tradeoff runs the other way as well: FKM is not the seal you want for every water treatment chemical, so check your media against the elastomer before you commit. Nibco publishes a plastics incompatibility warning covering POE and similar synthetic oils, and the valve body is PVC, which brings its own chemical limits separate from the seal.
5) What is the difference between a compact economy PVC ball valve and a true union PVC ball valve?
The S45CE-V is the compact economy design: a one-piece body with solvent weld sockets and no union nuts. That makes it shorter, lighter and cheaper to install, and it is maintenance free in normal service, but it cannot be taken apart in the line. A true union valve has threaded union nuts on both ends so you can pull the body out to replace seals or clear the ball without cutting pipe. Pick the compact valve for isolation points you do not expect to service, and a true union valve where the media is dirty or the seals are a wear item you plan to change.
6) Will this valve corrode in a wet mechanical room or buried irrigation box?
No, and that is the main reason to run PVC here. The body is PVC, so it will not rust, scale, pit or corrode, and Schedule 80 PVC has the highest long-term hydrostatic strength of the major thermoplastics used for piping. For a facility standardizing isolation valves across irrigation zones or chemical feed lines, that removes the seized-stem problem you get with brass or iron in wet locations. Stay inside the 113 degree F service limit and it is a maintenance-free part.
7) Can I drop a socket PVC ball valve into an existing threaded PVC line?
Not directly. The S45CE-V has solvent weld sockets, not female threads, so it will not screw onto a threaded nipple. To put it in a threaded line you need a Sch 80 PVC male adapter (MIPT x socket) on each side, or you order the threaded version of the valve instead. If the existing valve you are replacing unscrews, the threaded body is the simpler swap.
8) How do I tell the FKM version of this Chemtrol valve apart from the EPDM one on site?
By the handle color. The FKM S45CE-V has a blue handle with a blue cap, on a dark grey PVC body. If a maintenance crew needs to know which seal is in a given valve after the fact, that blue handle is the field marker, so it is worth noting on the as-built where the FKM valves went in.
