Nibco N00116A – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Is the Nibco TI-8 gate valve full port in the 1 inch and 2 inch sizes?
Yes. The TI-8 is full port from 1/4 inch through 2 inch, so a 1 inch or 2 inch valve passes the full bore with no restriction. From 2-1/4 inch up through 4 inch it switches to conventional port, which means the 2-1/2, 3, and 4 inch valves have a gate opening smaller than the pipe ID. If you are sizing for minimum pressure drop on a 3 inch line, that difference matters.
2) What end connections does the Nibco TI-8 gate valve have, and do I need adapters for copper pipe?
Both ends are female NPT thread (FIPT), NPT x NPT. That means it threads directly onto male-threaded steel or brass pipe and onto threaded nipples. It will not take copper tube directly. Running copper, you need male adapters soldered or pressed onto the tube, then thread into the valve. For a solder-end valve you would be looking at a different Nibco model entirely.
3) How much headroom does the Nibco TI-8 gate valve need above it to open?
None beyond the handwheel itself. The TI-8 is a non-rising stem design, so the stem turns without travelling upward and the handwheel stays at the same height whether the gate is open or shut. That is what makes it workable in a valve box, a tight ceiling space, or against a joist where a rising stem valve would jam. You do lose the visual open/closed indication a rising stem gives you.
4) Can I use a Nibco TI-8 gate valve to throttle flow, or only to shut off?
Shutoff only, fully open or fully closed. A solid wedge gate riding on integral brass seats gets chewed up if you park it partway open, and the flow across a cracked gate erodes the seating surfaces. Use it as an isolation valve. If you need to regulate flow on that line, a ball or globe valve is the right part and the gate valve goes upstream of it as the isolator.
5) What pressure is the Nibco TI-8 gate valve rated for?
200 psi / 13.8 bar non-shock cold working pressure. That covers ordinary irrigation mains and light commercial or residential distribution with margin. Non-shock is the operative word: the rating assumes no water hammer, so on a line with a fast-acting solenoid downstream size your arrestors accordingly. Gate valves are also slow-closing by nature, which helps on that front.
6) Does the Nibco TI-8 gate valve have to be installed in a particular flow direction?
No. The TI-8 is bi-directional, so it holds and seals with flow either way through the body. There is no arrow to line up. Practically, that means you can drop it into a loop or a line you might later reverse without a second thought, and you cannot install it backwards.
7) Can the Nibco TI-8 gate valve be repacked or rebuilt in place, or do I have to cut it out?
It uses a screw-in bonnet, so the bonnet threads out of the body for access to the stem and wedge. On a leaking-stem valve that is your repair path, and the body stays in the piping. Bear in mind the ends are threaded NPT, so a full valve swap means breaking a union or cutting the line anyway. Fit a union next to it on a line you expect to service.
8) What pipe sizes does the Nibco TI-8 gate valve come in?
Nine sizes: 1/4, 3/8, 1, 1-1/4, 1-1/2, 2, 2-1/2, 3, and 4 inch. For fleet or facility standardization, the common irrigation and light commercial sizes are all covered, with model numbers running N001164 for the 1/4 inch up to N00116H for the 4 inch. Remember the port style changes with size: full port through 2 inch, conventional port on 2-1/2 and larger.
9) Gate valve or ball valve for an irrigation mainline shutoff?
The TI-8 gate valve suits a buried or valve-box mainline isolator: non-rising stem keeps the profile short, the solid wedge seals bi-directionally, and it closes slowly across multiple handwheel turns, which is easier on a long irrigation run than the hammer a quarter-turn ball valve can produce. A ball valve wins where you want a visible handle position and one-quarter-turn operation, or where the valve gets cycled often. Gate valves are a poor pick for frequent cycling and for any throttled position.
10) Is the Nibco TI-8 gate valve suitable for a commercial building or only houses?
Nibco positions the TI-8 for light commercial and residential work, and it is classed for residential plumbing use. On a heavy commercial or institutional spec calling for a specific valve grade, check the drawing before substituting, because 200 psi CWP brass body construction is not always what a commercial spec calls for. And it cannot go on potable water in the U.S. regardless of building type.
