Sta-Kon F273 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What wire size does the Sta-Kon F273 flag terminal accept?
The F273 is sized for 4 to 3 AWG conductors. That is a heavy feeder/motor-lead range, so it will not crimp down reliably on smaller 6 AWG or 8 AWG wire, and it won't take 2 AWG. If your conductor is outside 4-3 AWG, you need a different terminal in the series.
2) Why use a flag terminal instead of a standard straight ring terminal?
A flag terminal puts the barrel at a right angle to the tongue, so the wire runs parallel to the mounting surface instead of straight into the stud. Use the F273 when you are tight on depth in a panel, gutter, or motor connection box and a straight 4-3 AWG lug would bend the conductor past its radius. If you have the room to come in axially, a standard straight ring lug is simpler.
3) Is the Sta-Kon F273 insulated, and does it need anything over it?
It is a non-insulated terminal, bare copper with a metallic finish. The crimp barrel and tongue are exposed, so in any application where you need to keep the connection from shorting to an adjacent phase or an enclosure wall you will have to add heat shrink or a boot yourself. Nothing insulating is part of the terminal.
4) Can I use the F273 flag terminal on aluminum conductors?
No. It is a copper terminal, so run it on copper conductors only. Aluminum feeders need a terminal rated AL/CU for that service; putting aluminum into a copper-only barrel invites galvanic corrosion at the crimp.
5) Do I need a special crimper for a 4-3 AWG non-insulated flag terminal?
Yes. At 4-3 AWG this is a heavy non-insulated barrel, which takes a full-cycle hydraulic or heavy mechanical crimper with the correct die for the gauge, not a hand tool made for insulated 22-10 AWG terminals. The tool and die are separate from the terminal.
6) Is the Sta-Kon F273 made in the USA for Buy American projects?
Country of origin on the F273 is the United States, which is what government, healthcare, and education procurement teams normally need documented on domestic-preference jobs.
