Sta-Kon A18-PS-M – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What wire sizes does the Sta-Kon A18-PS-M parallel splice accept?
The A18-PS-M is sized for 22 to 16 AWG stranded copper wire. Both conductors enter the barrel from the same side and run parallel, so it is for joining two wires end-to-end in the same direction rather than butting them nose to nose. Stay inside the 22-16 range; an 18 AWG-class barrel crimped onto 14 AWG will not form a proper crimp.
2) Is the Sta-Kon A18-PS-M insulated, or do I have to sleeve it myself?
It is a bare, non-insulated splice. The barrel is copper with a metallic finish and no nylon or vinyl sleeve, so you insulate it after crimping with heat shrink or tape. Budget for that material on the job if the splice lands anywhere a conductor could be touched or could contact a grounded surface.
3) Is the Sta-Kon A18-PS-M UL listed for an inspected installation?
Yes. The A18-PS-M carries UL file E9809, which is the reference an inspector or a spec writer will want on a submittal for a wire termination. It is also made in the United States, which matters on Buy American and federally funded work.
4) Can I use the A18-PS-M splice on a 480V control circuit?
The splice carries a 600 V rating, so 120, 208, 240, 277 and 480 V circuits are all within it. Remember the rating applies to the completed, insulated connection: because the barrel ships bare, the insulation you add over it has to be rated for the circuit voltage too.
5) What is the difference between a parallel splice and a butt splice for joining two wires?
A butt splice takes one conductor in each end and joins wires running opposite directions, so the finished joint is roughly inline and twice the wire length. A parallel splice like the A18-PS-M takes both conductors in from the same end, lying side by side, so the splice sits at the end of a wire bundle. Use the parallel style when you are tapping or doubling back inside a panel or junction box and do not have room to run a conductor through to the far side.
6) Do I need a special crimp tool for the Sta-Kon A18-PS-M?
Use a crimper with a non-insulated barrel die in the 22-16 AWG range. The dies for insulated terminals are shaped for the sleeve and will not form the bare copper barrel correctly, so a plain terminal plier intended for insulated splices is the wrong tool here. No tool is supplied with the splice.
7) Is the A18-PS-M copper barrel suitable for aluminum conductors?
No. The barrel is copper and is intended for copper conductors only. Crimping aluminum into a copper-only barrel sets up a dissimilar metal joint that corrodes and loosens; for aluminum you need a connector specifically marked AL or AL9CU.
