Sta-Kon M975SP – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What wire size does the Sta-Kon M975SP ring terminal take?
The M975SP is sized for 4/0 AWG through 250 kcmil conductor. That is a single barrel size covering both, so if your cable is 4/0 or 250 MCM copper, this is the terminal. Smaller feeder sizes such as 3/0 or 2/0 need a different lug.
2) Is the Sta-Kon M975SP insulated, and do I need to cover it after crimping?
It's a non-insulated copper lug, bare barrel and bare tongue. Anywhere the termination needs to be insulated (inside a panel with tight phase spacing, or on a live bus), you cover it yourself after crimping with heat shrink or tape per your installation standard.
3) Why is this 250 MCM lug silver plated instead of plain copper or tin?
The M975SP is a copper lug with a silver plated finish. Silver plating keeps contact resistance low and resists oxidation on the mating surface, which is why it gets specified on switchgear and high current bus connections rather than general branch wiring. Plain tinned copper lugs are the usual choice for ordinary panel feeders.
4) Can I crimp the Sta-Kon M975SP with hand tools?
No. At 4/0 through 250 kcmil this is a hydraulic or battery crimp lug, not something you close with a hand plier tool. You need a compression tool and the correct die for the barrel size, and the crimp must be made per Sta-Kon's tooling chart for that conductor.
5) Is the M975SP a one-hole or two-hole lug?
One hole. It is a ring (single stud) terminal with a 1/2 inch hole. If your drawing calls for a two-hole NEMA pad for mechanical stability on bus work, this part will not satisfy that spec and you need a two-hole compression lug in the same 4/0 to 250 kcmil range.
6) Will a ring terminal like the M975SP work on a stud I can't remove the nut from completely?
A ring tongue is closed, so the conductor has to come off the stud entirely to install it. Where the nut cannot be fully removed, a spade (fork) tongue lug is the one that slides in sideways. The upside of the closed ring is that it cannot vibrate off the stud once the nut is torqued.
7) What is the Sta-Kon part number and where is it made?
Order it as Sta-Kon M975SP. Country of origin is Mexico.
