Sta-Kon E10721 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Is the Sta-Kon E10721 terminal insulated, and do I need to cover it after crimping?
It is a non-insulated tubular ring terminal, so the barrel is bare copper after crimping. In a panel or enclosure where live parts need covering, or where the lug sits close to other terminations, add heat shrink or a terminal boot over the barrel yourself. If you want the insulation built in, choose an insulated ring terminal instead.
2) What voltage can a Sta-Kon E10721 ring terminal be used at?
Rated 600 V, which covers standard commercial and industrial branch circuits, panelboard terminations, control cabinets, and motor connections. It also carries UL file E9809, which matters on institutional and inspected work where the terminations have to be listed components.
3) Do I need a special crimper for a 6 AWG non-insulated tubular ring terminal?
Yes. A tubular 6 AWG barrel needs a heavy crimp tool with the correct 6 AWG die, either a ratcheting non-insulated terminal crimper or a hydraulic/mechanical lug crimper. The cheap plastic-handle combination strippers used on 22 to 10 AWG insulated terminals will not form a proper crimp on this barrel, and a partial crimp is the usual cause of a failed termination.
4) Is a ring terminal or a fork terminal better for a motor or panel connection?
A ring terminal like the E10721 is the choice anywhere the connection is subject to vibration or has to stay put, because the stud passes through a closed ring and the lug cannot back off the screw if the nut loosens. A fork or spade slips on and off without removing the nut, which is faster for service work on terminal strips but can walk off under vibration. For motors, battery and ground pads, and bus bar landings, use the ring.
