1) What wire size does the Sta-Kon D10721 ring terminal take?
The D10721 is sized for 8 AWG conductor. One terminal, one wire size - there is no range here, so a 10 AWG or 6 AWG lead needs a different barrel size to crimp properly.
2) Is this terminal UL listed for an inspected commercial job?
The D10721 carries UL file E9809. If your inspector or spec calls for listed terminations, that file number is what you cite on the submittal.
3) Can I use the D10721 on aluminum conductor?
No. The barrel is copper and the terminal is specified for copper wire only. Aluminum feeders need an AL9CU or AL-rated connector with the correct inhibitor compound - putting an aluminum conductor in a copper-only barrel invites galvanic corrosion and a hot joint.
4) Is this ring terminal insulated, and do I need to sleeve it after crimping?
It is a non-insulated tubular ring terminal, bare copper with no plastic or nylon collar. On any live terminal where the barrel could be touched or could flash to an adjacent phase, cover the crimp with heat shrink or a terminal boot. The bare barrel is also what lets you inspect the crimp, which is why non-insulated is often preferred on panel and motor work.
5) What voltage is the Sta-Kon D10721 rated for?
600 V. That covers standard 120/208, 240, 277 and 480 V building and motor circuits, so it is usable in panelboards, control cabinets and motor connection boxes within that limit.
6) Do I need a special crimp tool for an 8 AWG non-insulated ring terminal?
Yes. An 8 AWG tubular barrel is beyond what a hand-squeeze insulated-terminal plier will properly compress. Use a ratcheting or hydraulic crimper with the die matched to 8 AWG non-insulated terminals. A pliers-pinch crimp on this size is the usual cause of a loose, heating connection.
7) What is the difference between a ring terminal like this and a fork or spade terminal?
A ring tongue is closed, so the terminal cannot pull off the stud unless the nut is fully removed. That is why it is the choice for motor leads, grounding and anything subject to vibration. Fork or spade tongues slide out sideways under a loosened screw, which makes them faster to service but unsuitable where vibration or code calls for a captive connection. The D10721 is the closed-ring type on a 5/16 inch stud.
