OATEY 12801 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What pipe size does the Oatey 12801 Aurora solar flashing fit?
The 12801 is sized for 1-1/2 inch pipe, and the description also lists it as a 1/2 inch to 1 inch galvanized roof flashing range on the collar side. The self-sealing collar slides down over the pipe and seals against it, so no caulk is needed at the penetration.
2) What roof pitch can this Oatey solar flashing be installed on?
Rated for pitch from 0 to 40 degrees, so it covers flat decks through roughly a 10/12 slope. Steeper than 40 degrees and you need a different flashing.
3) Can I use this flashing on a hot-mopped or built-up roof?
No. The Aurora 12801 is not for hot-mopped or built-up roofs. It suits shingle and similar pitched-deck assemblies within the 0 to 40 degree pitch range. For a BUR or modified-bitumen roof, use a flashing rated for hot asphalt application.
4) Will this flashing hold up over a B-vent or hot flue pipe?
It is rated for 180 degrees F continuous heat and approved for Type B installations, which is what makes it usable over a B-vent rather than only a cold plumbing stack.
5) How much deck does the base cover and what is it made of?
The base is 28 gauge galvanized steel measuring 9.5 by 12.5 inches, left unfinished. Plan your shingle overlap around that footprint so the upper edge tucks under the course above.
6) Can I paint the Oatey Aurora flashing to match the roof?
Do not paint the collar or the plastic base, and keep petroleum based products off them. Paint and petroleum attack the collar material and shorten the life of the seal. The steel base ships unfinished.
7) Do I need sealant or extra hardware to install the 12801?
No caulking at the pipe, the collar seals itself as it slides over the stack. You supply the roofing fasteners and work the base into the shingle courses; nothing else ships with it.
